TV TELLS TRUTH ABOUT SWAZILAND

‘For Africa’s last absolute monarch a celebration fit for a king. Swaziland’s Mswati III. This is a joint celebration of 40 years of independence and the King’s 40th birthday, but behind the impressive display, Mswati’s kingdom is crumbling under the weight of disease and poverty.’

These are the opening words to a news report broadcast on al Jazeera television yesterday (6 September 2008). It goes on to look behind the pomp of the 40/40 celebrations to look at real life in Swaziland. For those who were angered by the shopping trip made to the Middle East by eight of the King’s 13 wives, here’s a chance to see some of the stuff they bought.

The report, which lasts about three minutes, is available by clicking this link.

Yesterday (Saturday 6 September 2008), I saw an excellent report from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). It went away from the pomp and ceremony to see life in the rural areas. If anyone managed to download the report I’d really like to know.
