ARRESTS CONTINUE IN SWAZILAND

About 10 members of the banned Swaziland Youth Congress (SWAYOCO) were detained by police throughout the kingdom following a spate of petrol bottle attacks.

The Swazi News, an independent newspaper the kingdom ruled by King Mswati III, sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarch, reports today (12 June 2010) that they were taken to various police stations across Swaziland.

SWAYOCO officials have not been able to get in touch with the arrested because some police stations deny they have them.

There is heightened tension in Swaziland at the moment following a crackdown on pro-democracy activists and the recent unexplained death in custody of Sipho Jele, a prominent member of the banned People’s United Democratic Movement.

A number of attacks – mostly by bottles of petrol – have taken place in recent days in Swaziland. In the most serious of these, commercial explosives were used to blow up the home of Alex Langwenya, National Organising Secretary of the Swaziland United Democratic Front. Democracy activists believe the Swazi police were responsible for this attack.
