SEX SCANDAL: DOUBLE STANDARDS

There’s a case of double standards in the Times of Swaziland newspaper today (6 August 2010).

In the same edition where it covered up the truth that Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Ndumiso Mamba was forced to resign after being found having sex with Nothando Dube (also known as Inkhosikati LaDube), the 12th wife of King Mswati III, it splashed on this story:

A former local government councillor ‘was caught by his live-in lover in bed with another woman’.

The Times went on to give chapter and verse (naming names along the way) of how the two women had a ‘war of words’. One woman reported the other woman to the police for ‘insulting her’ and the case ended up in the Swazi National Court.

My question: Why is this story of adultery worthy of full coverage when the case of the king’s wife and a top cabinet minister is not?

I know senior editorial executives of the newspaper read this blog so I and my readers would be interested to hear from you about your story selection policy.
