NO, IT WASN’T A SPOOF MEMO

So, it wasn’t a spoof memo after all – the Swaziland Government really is so broke it can’t afford toilet paper in its offices.

A memo came from the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday (9 February 2011) calling on all staff members to bring their own toilet paper to work, the Weekend Observer, the newspaper in effect owned by King Mswati III, sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarch, reported yesterday.

The memo also said that anyone visiting the ministry would need to bring their own toilet paper. I’ll be all right then, I always carry a copy of the Observer with me.

The Weekend Observer also reported Majozi Sithole, Swazi Minister of Finance, saying there were examples where other government offices no longer served tea because they had run out of cash.

At the Justice Ministry court officials are struggling to commit prisoners to jail because of lack of appropriate stationery to effect the process. At the Manzini Magistrate Courts, cars are grounded for lack of fuel, while some police officers are forced to do minor repairs such as tyre repairs. They have also said the issuance of white shirts has been suspended.
