NEW PROTEST LEADERSHIP STANDS BY

A reliable source says Sibongile Mazibuko, the President of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers and other union leaders that are not under house arrest are currently (13 April 2011 evening) meeting to try to create a second tier of leadership to keep the movement going, in the face of the arrest of so many of the original leadership. The building that they are meeting in is currently surrounded by police, who are throwing in tear gas canisters and using rubber bullets in order to force the leaders to exit the building. The workers and unions remain resolute that the protest action continues and has not been called off as had been earlier announced by the Swaziland Democracy Campaign.

Communication with many of those in house arrest remains very difficult and the situation remains tense.
