ACTIVISTS NO BAIL EQUALS NO JUSTICE

Swaziland Democracy Campaign statement

Denial of Bail Another Swazi Travesty Of Justice

The Swaziland Democracy Campaign (SDC) strongly condemns the denial of bail for student activists Comrades Maxwell Dlamini and Musa Ngubeni this morning (6 May 2011) in the Manzini Regional Court.

In her judgement, Magistrate Florence Msibi made the ludicrous pronouncement that the outcry against their charge of being in possession of explosives and incendiary materials could not guarantee the safety of the community and the public.

We all know that this is not a punishment for any real crime but their punishment for being activists in the just struggle for democracy in Swaziland. This continued persecution of political activists will not end. Comrades Max and Musa are heading for a similar fate to that of Comrades Bheki and Zonke Dlamini who are still languishing in Mswati’s jails under trumped up charges brought against them under the Suppression of Terrorism Act.

The SDC supports the efforts underway to take this matter to the Swaziland High Court for review. We also support the application for Comrade Maxwell to write his university exams, having already missed one paper.

Comrades Max and Musa will be appearing again next Thursday at the Manzini Regional Court for a remand. Let us go out in our masses to support them!

Further, as the SDC we call upon all progressive organisations to support a picket of the Swazi Consulate in Johannesburg on Thursday 12th May at 12.30pm. This is the day of the next court appearance of Comrades Max and Musa.

Drop the trumped up charges!

Free all political prisoners now!

Show solidarity with Comrades Max and Musa!
