Swaziland resists democracy pressure from West

MBABANE, Swaziland — The prime minister of sub-Saharan Africa's last absolute monarchy says Swaziland will resist pressure from the West over democratic reforms.

Asked about reports that the U.S. has developed a road map to democracy for the southern African country, Sibusiso Barnabas Dlamini told newspaper editors that "we would wish to emphasize that the way our country is governed has been and continues to be determined by Swazis.

Dlamini met with the editors over the weekend, and his office released his comments yesterday (23 May 2011).

European countries have also raised concern about Swaziland, whose King Mswati III is accused of living lavishly while most Swazis live in poverty, and for repressing human rights and harassing and jailing pro-democracy activists.
