SDC Press Statement on Swaziland May Day

The Swaziland Democracy Campaign-SDC congratulates the emergence of the new unified trade union centre the TRADE UNION CONGRESS OF SWAZILAND (TUCOSWA) which was formally and appropriately launched on May Day in Swaziland. We wish all those concerned, and especially the new leadership of the federation, the warmest solidarity greetings and strength for the coming struggles that they will face.

As the struggle for democracy in Swaziland unfolds, it is clear that the trade union movement has a very special role to play in ensuring that the aspirations of the working class as a whole are represented and that there must be an explicit working class bias in whatever processes emerge.

We are confident that your combined power, insights and integrity will best serve the interests of the working class and the poor, and wish you the very best of solidarity for this purpose.

The lessons that are emerging from the April events are proving to be very important. The need to undertake the very important basic organising tasks on the ground including the building of class confidence is one lesson that we know you have already highlighted. Despite the very best of intentions, movements have to be built, and cannot be wished into existence, but we are certain that the new unified trade union movement will definitely be part of the future of a new democratic Swaziland.

The Swaziland Democracy Campaign is honoured to be associated with TUCOSWA, and its partners in Swaziland. We look forward to supporting the important role that TUCOSWA will play, and pledge our support and solidarity.
