SWAZI TEACHERS TO STRIKE IF PAY CUT

Teachers in Swaziland are ready to strike if the Swazi Government cuts their pay this month (July 2011).

They say they will take immediate action once the government announces its decision. The government has failed to get public service unions on its side for the cuts which it says are necessary because the kingdom has run out of money. Government is expected to make an announcement this week, possibly on Thursday.

Muzi Mhlanga, Secretary General of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers, said yesterday (11 July 2011) that as soon as the government announces the cut, teachers will take action.

‘We will not wait for payday to know whether the salaries have been tampered with,’ the Times of Swaziland, the kingdom’s only independent daily newspaper reported Mhlanga saying.

He said a text message was sent yesterday morning to union shop stewards to tell them to immediately mobilise against the cuts.

The Times reported he said teachers will be expected to go to school on the first day after the cuts are confirmed to mobilise each other and to finalise the logistic of the protest action.

Mhlanga said on the second day after the confirmation of the cuts all teachers will be expected to converge in their nearest town to protest.

He said should government unilaterally implement the cuts, teachers will no longer consider the kingdom as having a government and they will protest until a new government is put in place.
