BBC REPORT CRITICISES SWAZI KING

The BBC World Service radio has broadcast another piece critical of Swaziland’s King Mswati III, sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarch.

The From Our Own Correspondent programme yesterday (25 August 2011) included an item looking at the financial crisis in Swaziland. Journalist Louise Redvers who regularly contributes items on Swaziland to the BBC and the Mail and Guardian newspaper in South Africa reports, ‘some in the country lay the blame for the crisis at the feet of the king’.

She says that although King Mswatii says he will talk with pro-democracy campaigners as a condition of getting a R2.4 billion loan from South Africa, many in the kingdom doubt that he will.

She quotes one person saying the king will have to be dragged ‘kicking and screaming from his palace’.
