Press Release

23 August 2011

Plan of Action towards Global Week of Action on Swaziland

Following a very successful gathering of Swaziland democracy activists, trade unions and others last Friday (19 August 2011), a Plan of Action has been developed on behalf of the Swaziland United Democratic Front including the united trade union movement and civil society organisations and will include the following actions in the build up to the Global Week of Action scheduled for 5 – 9 September 2011.

1. To mobilise support for the Global Week of Action on Swaziland (5 – 9 September 2011) by delegations of Unions, faith based organisations and other civil society formation to commit to joining in marches in Swaziland that have been planned by the Swazi trade union movement.

2. To organised a march and picket on Friday 9th September at the Reserve Bank in Pretoria to expose the absence of democratic conditionalities, and to object to the austerity programme enshrined in the bailout as it currently stands.

3. To support a picket of Parliament that is being organised by the Cape Town Chapter of the SDC during the Global Week of Action in order to draw attention to the bailout conditions, and to call for terms in line with democratisation and in solidarity with the people of Swaziland.

4. To organise Swazi Solidarity events in each Province before or during the Global Week of Action to alert the membership and the public generally of the need for solidarity, and to explain why the existing terms of the bailout are unacceptable.

5. To consolidate and publicise information to uncover the economic linkages which exist between Swaziland and South Africa and elsewhere in order to effectively implement a goods and services boycott to isolate the regime, and those who support it.

6. To begin immediately to secure resources for a Global Solidarity Conference on Swaziland In the first quarter of 2012 in South Africa to further strengthen the democracy movement in Swaziland, and effective solidarity action world-wide with a special emphasis on African solidarity.

7. To immediately establish a daily electronic bulletin on Swaziland on the build up to the Global Week of Action to ensure that accurate reporting on events in Swaziland and solidarity activities elsewhere are noted and shared, and to provide a reliable platform for democracy activists in Swaziland.
