WITNESS TO SWAZI POLICE VIOLENCE

The BBC World Service interviewed one of the Swaziland university students who were beaten up by police when they tried to peacefully present a petition to the Swazi Parliament calling for the University of Swaziland to be reopened.

It is closed because of the spending crisis that is gripping Swaziland at present.

The student tells the BBC they were stopped because police said their march was disrespectful to King Mswati III, who is sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarch.

The item appeared in the Network Africa programme at 03.30 this morning (26 August 2011). Click on the link to hear it – it starts about 15 minutes into the programme.
