SECURITY FORCES ‘WILL CLAMPDOWN’

Swaziland’s Police Commissioner Isaac Magagula said security forces would clampdown on protest actions across the kingdom today (12 April 2012).

He said the demonstrations were not in the best interests of national security.

Protests for democratic reforms are taking place across the kingdom, ruled by King Mswati III, sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarch.

In a statement, Magagula said no gathering of any kind would be allowed.

He said, ‘As an organ of state responsible for safety, security and public order, we wish to make it clear to whosoever is concerned that state apparatus consisting the security forces will not allow the intended action to proceed as planned.’

He said protesters were a threat to internal security.

In a separate statement, Barnabas Dlamini, the Swazi Prime Minister, banned all protest marches, saying the courts had declared them illegal. He said, ‘National security agents have been instructed to protect life and property.’
