MISOGYNIST WRITER’S PUBLICITY STUNT

Qalakaliboli Dlamini, the journalist at the centre of a storm over his newspaper column in which he called battered women ‘bitches’ and said they only had themselves to blame when they were attacked, has admitted to his Facebook followers that the publicity he has generated would help him to sell a book he is about to publish.

He wrote on Facebook, ‘My book is already with the publishers and such attention will help me sell as many copies as I can. So this actually works to my advantage.’

He added, ‘I am currently working on another book.’

Dlamini caused outrage among human rights groups and ordinary Swazi people when his article was published in the Times Sunday last week (9 December 2012). Alec Lushaba, Chair of the media freedom organisation MISA, publicly supported his right to say what he liked in his article, however unpalatable it was.

Martin Dlamini, the managing editor of the Times of Swaziland, also publicly defended Qalakaliboli against his critics, even though the Times has been besieged by criticism since the publication of the article.

The Times has yet to react to the revelation that Qalakaliboli Dlamini is using the controversy generated by his article to sell his new book.
