DOES SWAZI KING WANT BLOODBATH?

Swaziland is under the spotlight for importing arms through Mozambique. But why is the Swazi government buying weapons?


Manqoba Nxumalo, writing in the Daily Maverick, says the kingdom ruled by King Mswati III, sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarch, first created an army in 1972 to support Mswati’s father, King Sobuza II. Sobhuza said he would place his army at strategic places of the country” to ensure his order was respected.


Today, Swaziland has no need of an army except to turn against the Swazi people.


In light of the looming protests and an ‘uprising’ called for 12 April, Nxumalo asks what lengths are the government of King Mswati III prepared to go to cling to power? Could it be that Mswati wants to take a cue from long-time friend, embattled Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, and order a mass killing of Swazi citizens?
