890 000 leaked state documents: soldier, man demand E230k bribe from Archbishop Lukhele, arrested

By Sibusiso Shange, Times of eSwatini, 15 May 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: Police have arrested two men for reportedly attempting to extort a sum of E230 000 from Archbishop Bheki Lukhele of All Nations Church in Zion.

This is the first spin-off from the widely publicised Swazi Secrets, an investigative project coordinated by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). It was said the project is based on 890 000 leaked documents from Eswatini’s Financial Intelligence Unit (EFIU), which ICIJ says it shared with a team of 38 journalists across 11 countries. The reports documented Archbishop Lukhele as having allegedly played a role in the transfer of certain monies from the African National Congress’s election account.

There is no record of Archbishop Lukhele responding to the allegations. Police are said to be investigating allegations that the two emaSwati men took advantage of the allegations made in the reports to solicit a bribe from the church leader. One of the two men, who posed as officers from the Eswatini Financial Intelligence Unit (EFIU), was arrested yesterday.
In the attempt to extort Lukhele, they are said to have informed him that they could assist to protect him from being arrested, as he was aware of the information contained in the recently published leaked documents. It has been gathered that one of the suspects is a soldier.  The duo aged 38 and 34 allegedly misrepresented to Lukhele that they were investigating the matter and that he would be arrested unless he paid the bribe.

However, sources said Lukhele, who insisted on his innocence, hastened to report the matter to the police, whose investigations led to the arrest of the duo. The duo was subsequently arrested and is currently assisting the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) with information. They were due to appear in court yesterday afternoon, however, they were produced and taken back to the police station, without appearing before any judicial officer, after spending about an hour in a police van, at the Mbabane Magistrates Court.

eSwatini, burdened doubly with HIV and cervical cancer, targets safety for the next generation

By Nonduduzo Kunene, Vaccines Work, 13 May 2024

SOURCE

Eswatini suffers a double burden, with uncommonly high rates of both HIV and cervical cancer.

The country’s HIV prevalence of 25.9% among adults is one of the highest in the world. Its age-standardised cervical cancer incidence –  84.5 per 100,000 – is the world’s highest, bar none.

Those two disease rates are not independent of each other. Women living with HIV and the cancer-causing human papillomavirus (HPV) are more likely to contract cervical cancer than their HIV-negative counterparts with HPV. A 2017 research paper from Eswatini found that women with HIV had a much higher rate of cervical lesions (22.9%) than HIV-negative women (5.7%).

Encouragingly, another study, also from Eswatini, and published just last month in the journal PLOS Global Public Health, points to the impact a robust public health response can have. Not only did the new research show lower-than-expected cervical cancer positivity rates overall – about 2.6% across both of the regions under study – it also showed that women living with HIV who had been on anti-retroviral therapy for longer periods of time were less likely to screen positive for cervical cancer than women whose HIV had been medically managed for less than five years. Women whose HIV load had been suppressed by treatment to undetectable levels, were also less likely to screen positive for the cancer than women with unsuppressed HIV burdens.

If those findings are encouraging, so are health policy initiatives being enacted on the ground. On 25 March 2024, Eswatini’s Ministry of Health mobilised a US$ 1.6 million grant for the introduction of HPV through Gavi’s Middle-Income Countries approach.  This is part of a focused move to drastically reduce cervical cancer by 2030.

King Mswati’s Government maintains silence as Taiwan nationals invade rural areas, forcefully seize land belonging to poor and powerless citizens while demolishing houses

By Bongiwe Dlamini, Swaziland News, 13 May 2024

SOURCE

GEGE: King Mswati’s Government has maintained silence as Taiwan nationals invade the rural areas, forcefully seizing land from the poor and powerless citizens.

The land grabbing by Taiwan investors that started at Gege-Mbondzela in the South-western parts of eSwatini last week, is highly expected to spread to other areas as the Chinese province advance its economic interests while violating human rights in the tiny Kingdom.

Taiwan is a diplomatic ally to eSwatini despite the United Nations (UN) Resolution 2758 of 1972 that recognizes the One China Principle, the Chinese province previously donated helicopters to the army were used to launch air-strikes, shoot and kill innocent civilians during the unrest.

The Taiwan helicopters donated to the army are highly expected to start patrolling Mbondzela-Gege to monitor the residents and intimidate them to refrain from protesting, some of the residents are sleeping in the forests after the demolition of their homes.

Government Spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo had not responded at the time of compiling this report.

Mciniseli Nhleko, a senior citizen of Gege was subsequently arrested for raising a voice against the Taiwan nationals who demolished his home last week, the Taiwanese are using businessmen Tito Dlamini and Sandile Simelane.

John Fan, the Managing Director of Nhlangano FTM Garments has been identified as one of the Taiwan investors who, with the backing of those in power, is grabbing land from the poor and powerless citizens.

Both businessmen, the Taiwan investor including Ambassador Jeremy Liang declined to comment regarding the ongoing human rights violations.

On another note, eSwatini pro-democracy and civil society groups strongly condemned the ongoing human rights violations perpetrated by Taiwan, a province of the People’s Republic of China.

Mlungisi Makhanya, the President of the People’s United Democratic Movement(PUDEMO) told this Swaziland News that, the diplomatic relations between eSwatini and Taiwan represents nothing but, a misery for the ordinary citizens.

“What this represents for the ordinary people of Swaziland is misery as you would see that, the people of Gege are today without homesteads because a Taiwanese engineered economic interest has led to them being evicted. We want to remind our people that, it must never be lost to them that, when the Royal Science Technology Park was to be constructed, emaSwati were violently and forcefully evicted there in a very cruel manner and that project, Swazis would remember, is being bankrolled by Taiwan”, said the PUDEMO President.

Public Accounts Committee blasts Health Ministry

By Phephile Motau, eSwatini Observer, 16 May 2024

SOURCE

The shortage of drugs and other medical supplies in the country is not the only challenge facing the ministry of health, as it seems that they also have an administrative crisis.

This was evident yesterday when the ministry failed to submit four of five responses to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) which held its first sitting yesterday.

It was attended by the officials from the ministry and other PAC partners including the Auditor General’s (AG) officials, police, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Civil Service Commission (CSC).

The ministry, led by the Principal Secretary (PS) Khanya Mabuza was the first to appear before the PAC and only submitted one report, which was riddled with mistakes.

The PAC had to send away the ministry, without even discussing the one report which was submitted, as it was also submitted to the committee yesterday. The ministry has been given seven working days to submit the reports.

The responses were from audit queries made in five reports since 2021. These were the PAC Recommendations for 2021, the PAC Recommendations 2022, Auditor General’s Compliance Report for the Financial year Ended March 31, 2021, Financial Audited Report on the Consolidated Government Accounts of the kingdom of Eswatini for the year Ended March 31, 2022, Audit of Acquisition and Distribution of Medicine to Health Facilities 2023 and the Financial Audited Report on the Consolidated Government Accounts of the Kingdom of Eswatini for the year Ended March 31, 2022.

Street monitoring cameras for Mbabane

By Sithembile Hlatshwayo, Times of eSwatini, 15 May 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: The capital city will soon have internet protocol (IP) cameras, which will assist in monitoring and giving information on every movement within the central business district (CBD).

The cameras will be able to monitor traffic, among other things. It was revealed that 50 cameras will be installed in strategic areas. This has raised serious concerns of invasion of privacy by some stakeholders who wanted clarity on how the project would work. This was raised during the launch of the 5G government network and smart city (Mbabane) at Hilton Garden Inn yesterday.

Eswatini Communication Commission (ESCCOM) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mvilawempi Dlamini raised the issue of privacy with cameras installed everywhere. He said there was a need to strike a balance between the State’s security interests as well as peoples’ privacy. Dlamini said there was a need for agreements in some of the aspects, as the project was a good initiative. Dlamini said there needed to be discussions around the sharing of infrastructure to avoid having multiple poles, adding that there was a need to come up with standards for same.
Another concern which was raised by the stakeholders was fear of the project becoming a white elephant. They wanted clear information in terms of who would support the project financially once it has been implemented. The stakeholders made an example of the cameras along Malagwane Hill, which ended up failing.

eSwatini among Africa’s worst governed nations

by Sibusiso Dlamini, eSwatini Observer, 6 May 2024

SOURCE

Eswatini is among the top 10 worst-governed nations in Africa, according to World Economics, a respected UK-based research organisation.

The United Nations defines good governance as the process where public institutions conduct public affairs and manage public resources in a manner that promotes the rule of law and the realisation of human rights (civil, political, economic, social and cultural).

The good governance ranking, according to the organisation, is assessed through four main indexes; corruption perception, rule of law, press freedom, and political rights, with each of them given equal weight.

The comprehensive assessment of the governance dynamics expose glaring deficiencies across these benchmarks and systemic issues hindering progress and development in the country, from rampant corruption and political instability to a disregard for the rule of law.

….

Public Sector Associations who represent civil servants in various sectors said the index’s findings were believable to them as its findings was a lived experience for them, emphasising that a majority of their issues stem from bad governance.

“There are no lies to that at all because working with government exposes poor governance on a daily and it is incredibly frustrating,” said Swaziland National Association of Government Accounting Personnel (SNAGAP) Secretary, Phumzile Masilela, reacting to the Index.

“There's no transparency, no respect for workers' rights, and even the law is disregarded,” she added, emphasising the frustrations encountered within government's operations.
She complained of corruption within government and said it had planted an attitude and spirit of incompetency.

“There are people who do as they please because they are connected, and once you try to be vocal about it, you are ostracised and victimised, which is bad governance of the highest order,” she stated. Masilela also accused government of bad communication, and shone light on the fact that the country could not chart a path towards inclusive growth and development without concerted efforts towards comprehensive governance reform.

“Until we commit to that, the new era of prosperity and stability will remain nothing but a pipe dream,” she said, further speaking against the introduction of the Performance Management System (PMS) without provision of working tools.

Similarly, President of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT), Mbongwa Dlamini, said the Index was a true reflection of the country, calling to attention the pervasive corruption in the nation and its impact on the education sector. “Nothing is transparent, from the hiring of teachers to promotions, so imagine what that does to the spirit of the professionals in the profession, let alone the learning process when educators have to teach while dispirited,” he quipped.

Dlamini warned that it is high time the government realises that bad governance has far-reaching consequences, in particular on critical sectors such as education.

Prime Minister urges workers to build own clinics, private schools and make money amid collapsed health, education system

By Bongiwe Dlamini, Swaziland News, 6 May, 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: Prime Minister (PM) Russell Mmiso Dlamini who attended the Workers Day Celebration at the Prince of Wales Sports Group on Wednesday [1 May 2024], did not come with a solution on how his administration will create jobs for workers but instead, he urged nurses and teachers to build their own clinics and private schools in order to make money.

This is contained in a written statement that was supposed to be delivered by the PM on Wednesday, the Prime Minister (PM)had to flee for safety after being stopped by angry workers from addressing the May Workers Day Celebration.

“On this May Day, I would like to make propositions that will transform our lives as workers. Primarily, I would like to motivate that we can be better than where we are today and our future can be brighter if we maintain the right mindset. Workers, for instance, can build their own banks that will enable us to access finance at low rates. Through these banks, we can lend even to our employers and charge them reasonable interest rates. Teachers can build private schools and make a decent living from that, just as we have other international schools in the country. Nurses can build private clinics and hospitals and make a decent living from that as well”, said the Prime Minister (PM).

The sentiments of the PM comes amid a collapsed health and education system in the midst of corruption in the public administration and royal extravagant spending.

Reached for comments by this Swaziland News on Monday afternoon Wander Mkhonza, the Secretary General of the Amalgamated Trade Union of Swaziland (ATUSWA) criticized the statement of the Prime Minister, saying privatization of basic services like health and education will not improve the wellbeing of the people.

“While we agree that workers must everyday work on improving their financial independence, we as workers do not agree with the views of Prime Minister on workers building private clinics and private schools precisely because we don't believe that privatisation basic necessities like health and education improves the general wellbeing of our people. Private institutions do not work on a mandate to improve lives but work to make profits and the detrimental of those that do not have the means. It is therefore wrong for government to suggest that workers must build businesses that would somehow replace the social responsibility of government”, said the well-known unionist.

Warning on syndicate harvesting body parts

By Sithembile Hlatshwayo, Times of eSwatini, 7 May 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: The Office of the Prevention of People Trafficking and People Smuggling has warned members of the public to be on the lookout for a syndicate harvesting human body parts and trafficking of same.

This warning follows revelations by some victims who said they survived the trap by a certain woman who had lured them after running an advert in this publication, purporting to be looking for a helper. A post was also run on the social media pages attracting attention from desperate job seekers.

Head of Secretariat- Prevention of People Trafficking and People Smuggling at the Prime Minister’s Office Nompumelelo Lukhele, urged the nation to carefully study details on adverts and social media posts regarding job opportunities. Lukhele said the location was important to get an idea of who the people offering the jobs were and where they came from. In the process, Lukhele said the job seekers should get clear particulars of the advertisers.

According to Lukhele, it was difficult for the job seekers to know who the people were, hence it was safer to avoid going to the location sent by those offering the jobs alone. She said the companion should wait until the interview was over in either the office or home, where it was taking place, in the case where helpers were being sought. The head of secretariat added that in the event the job seeker had suspicions about the offer not being authentic, they should go with their instinct and not show up.

‘You are loved’: A clinic for at-risk people in eSwatini

Doctors Without Borders, 2 May 2024

SOURCE

The small but bustling town of Matsapha in Eswatini is known for its industrial businesses and textile firms. Women from across the country come here seeking employment opportunities, often in factories offering minimal pay.

Known as a town “where the buyer meets the seller,” Matsapha is also a hub for sex work. This year, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), in collaboration with stakeholders from Eswatini's Health Ministry and community leaders, officially opened a clinic, which the local community has named “Sitsandziwe,” translating to “you are loved.”

The clinic’s scope of health coverage was informed by a 2022 MSF study on sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which identified a significant prevalence of STIs, particularly impacting people between the ages of 18 to 29.

Matsapha is also a welcoming place for the LGBTQI+ community, and has hosted events to encourage marginalized groups to seek health care.

In response to the need for an inclusive and comprehensive sexual health clinic, Sitsandziwe aims to offer effective and convenient sexual health services. The team provides all services free of charge, while ensuring a safe and private environment.

Addressing the STI burden is a long-term endeavor that involves not just medical solutions but also tackling social challenges.

“The ultimate goal of the clinic's activities is to gather data, identify challenges, and uncover opportunities for the national program, leading to policy changes. These could include the introduction of lab-based STI diagnosis and treatment, as well as hepatitis services at primary health clinics,” said Dr. Hayk Karakozian, MSF medical coordinator in the clinic.

Good Shepherd’s life-changing surgery on kids with disabilities

By Wonderboy Dlamini, eSwatini Observer, 8 May 2024

SOURCE

Good Shepherd Catholic Hospital has recorded in its history books the first ever procedure known as gastrocnemius recession and other procedures on four children with disabilities.

The four children who were initially diagnosed with cerebral palsy and clubfoot had severe joint contractures and deformities.

The operations to lengthen and straightening the hands and feet were performed last week at the hospital's theatre by a team of doctors from the United Kingdom (UK).

The team was invited to the country by one of the hospital's volunteer surgeons, Dr Joseph Northway.

Explaining about the procedure, Dr Alex Aarvold, a visiting surgeon, said it was all about helping children with disabilities.

“The surgeries were to help these children stand and perform tasks independently. We screened nine children, and operated on four of them,” he said.

Aarvold expressed hope to help more children when his colleagues visit the hospital in the next two months.

Ex-Deputy Prime Minister (DPM)Themba Masuku received over R2million ANC alleged laundered corrupt monies from All Nations Bishop Bheki Lukhele

By Zweli Martin Dlamini, Swaziland News, 8 May, 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: Themba Masuku, the former Deputy Prime Minister(DPM) allegedly received over R2million alleged African National Congress (ANC) laundered corrupt monies from controversial Bishop Bheki Lukhele of the All Nations Church in Zion, an investigation by AmaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism in collaboration with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) has found.

In a report published this week and quoting a bundle of documents sourced from the Eswatini Financial Intelligence Unit (EFIU), the team of international investigative journalists found that, through his company-Lawuba Investments (Pty) Ltd, former DPM Themba Masuku, the then Shiselweni Regional Administrator (RA), sold a Farm to Bishop Lukhele at a suspicious inflated price amounting to over R2million in what was suspected to be an act of money laundering.

Referring to an article previously published by this Swaziland News, AmaBhungane quoted Bishop Lukhele having claimed that his money was legitimate.

This publication questioned the Bishop in 2019 after he was seen questionably accumulating wealth with no clear source of income.

“I can confidently confirm that my money is clean because it is received through the banks, it is traceable with all the proof. I don’t deposit money to the bank in cash except for the church offerings,” said Lukhele.

The investigative report produced under the ongoing highly effective investigative journalism project by Swazi Secrets, AmaBhungane and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ)further reveals that, Judge Andreas Lukhele while practicing as a lawyer at Peter Dunseth Attorneys, was an alleged transferring attorney and a money-laundering conduit for Bishop Lukhele and former DPM Themba Masuku.

A questionnaire was sent to the former DPM, however, he had not responded at the time of compiling this report.

May Day drama: PM denied platform to address workers, leaves

By Nonduduzo Kunene, Timothy Simelane and Siboniso Nkambule, Times of eSwatini, 2 May 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: Prime Minister (PM) Russell Dlamini left the Prince of Wales Sports Ground unceremoniously after he was denied the opportunity to address workers during the Workers’ Day celebration yesterday.

So hostile were the workers that police had to fire a stun grenade to deter them from coming too close to the PM’s motorcade, as he was hurriedly whisked away from the Prince of Wales.
Dlamini’s attendance of the May Day commemoration was groundbreaking, in that it was a first for the country for the head of government to grace a Workers’ Day celebration. He was in the company of the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Phila Buthelezi and Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs Jane Simelane. Just before he was invited to address the thousands of workers, the sound system was disconnected and when senior police officers went to enquire, they were told to back off.

At that stage, the event had been taken over by the workers, while the union executive committee members were kept at bay. The uncontrollable workers chanted slogans and danced close to the tent where the PM and his dignitaries were seated. Police had to form a human barrier to prevent them from getting close to the Cabinet members. Police officers, who are members of the PM’s security detail, were seen frequently communicating with the PM, purportedly on the status of his safety. He kept his calm, until a few missiles started flying from the workers. Soon, thereafter, he rose from his feet and wade way to his motorcade. The departure of the PM cut short the 2024 Trade Union Congress of Swaziland (TUCOSWA)-organised May Day commemoration, leaving some workers dissatisfied. In the two hours that the PM graced the event, he had to stomach insults and unpalatable words that were uttered by some of the speakers who are members of political parties, as they were offered a platform to address the workers.

Over 2 000 paramedics jobless 10 years later

By Nokuzola Thwala, eSwatini Observer, 26 April 2024

SOURCE

Over 2 000 interned paramedics are said to be unemployed 10 years after completing their training.

Other paramedics have never worked since they completed training. Some of the paramedics were self-sponsored while others were trained at the taxpayer’s expense.

This was revealed by Eswatini Unemployed Paramedics Chairman, Mduduzi Mabuza, after a closed door meeting at Nkhanini Hall yesterday.

Mabuza, who was interviewed after the meeting, said the unemployment rate increases annually because over 80 paramedics qualify and graduate.

He emphasised their importance as paramedics, stating that they get to accident scenes first and at times reach where nurses could not.

The chairman added that their livehood was affected as some have families had responsibilities, and some were supposed to be breadwinners, but instead, became a burden.

He narrated how life was hard for them, hence the need for a quick permanent intervention.
Mabuza also noted that the interned unemployed paramedics differ in qualifications, but their work did not.

He said the country could benchmark with neighbouring countries so that they emulate them by having policies in place that would have mines industries and more interned paramedics.
Emphasising, he called for government’s intervention whether directly or indirectly while noting that they collectively decided to engage the National Public Services and Allied Workers Union (NAPSAWU) moving forward.

“Some have interned from 2014 until the year 2020 in the government sector.
“We have over 600 unemployed paramedics as of last year and this number increases annually as about 80 graduate after training annually,” he said.

Shocker: 1,109 pregnant teens visit clinics in 3 months

By Siboniso Nkambule, Times of eSwatini, 26 April 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: An astounding number of pregnant teenagers visited public health facilities in the past three months.

Statistics have revealed that the number of teenagers who visited health facilities for their first antenatal care (ANC) appointments in the last three months was 1 109. These include three 12-year-old pre-teenagers. Four of the teenagers were 13 years old, 29 were aged 14 years and a total of 82 were 15 year olds.

These statistics, according to the Ministry of Health, suggest a worrying trend that must be addressed through concerted efforts. The Top Doctor’s website defines antenatal care or ANC as the care a woman receives while pregnant, to ensure that both mother and baby are healthy. It involves regular check-ups with a doctor or midwife, with scans, screenings and blood tests to check on the development of the baby and identify any health problems in either mother or child that could cause problems.

The Health Promotional Officer in the Ministry of Health, Calvin Dlamini, said this painted a worrying picture, as they were still in their first quarter.  Dlamini said recording such numbers in the first quarter meant that by the end of the year, the numbers would have increased.

He said last year, they recorded an overall total of 4 469 teenagers who made their first ANC visit. According to Dlamini, 1 179 came from the Hhohho Region, 1 073 from the Lubombo Region, 1 156 from the Manzini Region, and 1 061 teenagers were from the Shiselweni Region. Dlamini stated that in the past three months, from January to March, a total of 154 teenagers aged 16 years, 228 aged 17 years old, 297 who were 18 years old, and 312 aged 19 years, made their first ANC visit in various health facilities.

Health Minister Mduduzi Matsebula amplifies Cabinet lies on health crisis as multibillion politically connected thieves protected, says drugs delivered

By Zweli Martin Dlamini, Swaziland News, 26 April, 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: Mduduzi Matsebula, the Minister of Health has amplified Cabinet lies amid the ongoing health crisis and/or shortage of drugs in public hospitals.

This comes after Commerce Minister Mancoba Khumalo, the then  Chairman of the Health Crisis Cabinet Select Committee promised that by January 2024, the health crisis would be over and Government would have long delivered drugs.

But what happened thereafter, Cabinet including the Health Minister embarked on a publicity drive, touring the Mbabane Government hospital on what was described as a fact finding mission to assess the situation.

A few boxes that did not fill-up the shelves at the Central Medical Stores were delivered at the end of January 2024 and a publicity stunt was activated again to claim drugs “have been delivered”, in the process, hundreds are dying in public hospitals amid shortage of drugs.

In an attempt to evade accountability as this publication is consistently publishing and exposing the health crisis, Government then banned public officials from responding to this Swaziland News.

Cabinet touring Mbabane Government Hospital

“The Ministry is working round the clock to resolve this issue. The Nation is assured that stocks of medicines and medical supplies are gradually being received”, said the Health Minister through the statement released on Thursday.

On another note, despite a forensic report released by Funduzi Forensic Services that exposed suppliers companies linked to SwaziPharm Director Kareem Ashraff, businesswoman Zinhle Matsebula and irregularities in the Procument Department, no arrests have been made as the suspects are allegedly linked to the Health Minister, Prime Minister (PM) Russell Mmiso Dlamini and King Mswati.

The health crisis was triggered by the widely reported and ongoing rampant corruption in public administration and royal extravagant spending.

How communities led in the HIV response, saving lives in eSwatini at the peak of a crippling AIDS epidemic

UNAIDS, 24 April 2024

SOURCE

Eswatini is one of the countries which has been most affected by HIV. At the peak of the epidemic in 2015, almost one out of three people were living with HIV. In 1995, when there was no antiretroviral treatment for people living with HIV, 73 000 people were living with HIV. 2400 people died of AIDS that year. Worried about the rising number of infections and deaths, communities of people living with HIV mobilized to press that antiretroviral treatment be made available for people living with HIV.

One of the key campaigners for access was Hannie Dlamini. Dlamini is now 50 years old and has been living with HIV for 32 years, after finding out about his HIV positive status at the age of 18. He was one of the first people in Eswatini to publicly declare his positive HIV status in 1995 at a time when the stigma and misinformation around HIV was rife.

Dlamini rallied together other people living with HIV as well as non-governmental organizations working to end AIDS in Eswatini, to ensure that everyone living with HIV and in need of treatment had access to it. They formed a community-led organization called Swaziland AIDS Support Organization (SASO) as a support group for people living with HIV. SASO also provided healthy living information for people living with HIV.

“When we asked the government [in 2002] for ARVs in Eswatini we did a pilot project with NECHA [National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS], to see if people would use the drugs.” Dlamini says the response was overwhelming, with many people keen to start the lifesaving treatment. “We initially planned to enrol 200 people on treatment but the demand was 630.” said Dlamini.

Today, Eswatini is one of the countries which has achieved the ambitious 95-95-95 targets (95% of people living with HIV who know their HIV status, 95% of people who know that they are living with HIV are on life-saving antiretroviral treatment, and 95% of people who are on treatment are virally suppressed). This achievement has put the country a step closer to ending AIDS as a public health threat, thanks to the work of community-led organizations, authorities and global partners like UNAIDS, the United States President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria who are working with the government and local communities to end AIDS.

Eswatini’s HIV response strategy includes ongoing nationwide testing and treatment campaigns, use of self-testing kits to encourage more people to take up testing at the comfort of their homes, antiretroviral treatment, male circumcision and pre-exposure prophylaxis (medicine to prevent HIV) and other prevention measures. Community organizations such as Kwakha Indvodza are also key in encouraging men to take full responsibility for their wellbeing and reducing toxic masculinity and gender-based violence which are some of the drivers of HIV.

Textile firm lays off 200 workers

by Andile Langwenya, Independent News (Swaziland), 30 April 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: Government’s job creation plans are facing a significant setback as close to 200 workers were recently laid off from a textile firm.

Juries Manufacturing in Nhlangano has blamed the latest action to orders drying up.

Management of the company said they tried to make arrangements but failed to save the jobs of the affected workers and further explained that future orders were unpredictable.

The apparel company employs around 1050 workers at the moment.

Investigations by the Independent News discovered that about 180 workers were laid off from the company around October last year, sparking off a labour dispute between the garment factory and the labour union looking after the welfare of textile industry workers, the Amalgamated Trade Union of Swaziland (ATUSWA). The dispute has already been reported at the Conciliation Mediation & Arbitration Commission, where the matter is pending.

The situation has had a very devastating effect on the affected workers.

Most of these workers have not been receiving their salaries or lay-off wages for the past five months, making the lives of the families of the affected individuals miserable. Difficulties facing the families include the disruption of the education of the children.

Expanding vaccination reach through integrated services in eSwatini

World Health Organization, 30 April 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: It was an enormous relief to mother Jabumkhaliphi Sifundza when her ten-year-old daughter, Nozweno, was vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV). She’d heard about the vaccine on social media and wanted to do everything possible to protect Nozweno from cervical cancer.

Alongside Eswatini’s efforts to vaccinate girls like Nozweno during immunization drives in schools, the government is leveraging the opportunity to simultaneously vaccinate the boys against COVID-19 in an innovative advance towards integrating these vaccines into routine immunization.

High HPV rates in the country are fuelled by high HIV rates, driving up cervical cancer case numbers and deaths. As of 18 April, Eswatini has, with the support of partners including World Health Organization (WHO), vaccinated over 50 000 girls in schools, with a national coverage of 64.3%

Meanwhile, although the emergency phase of COVID-19 is over, the virus continues to spread and endanger people’s lives. In Eswatini, integration of COVID-19 vaccination into other health programmes, including HPV immunization, chronic diseases and HIV, is high on its health agenda after the recent release of the country’s COVID-19 Vaccine Post-Introduction Evaluation by the Ministry of Health.

“Expanding access to preventative vaccines is vital to improve health and survival, as well as to lay the foundation for countries to reach every person with the basic health services they need to thrive. This dual immunization effort in our schools is an excellent example of optimizing our resources to boost overall vaccine coverage,” says Hon Mduduzi Matsebula, Eswatini’s Minister of Health.

The report says that while Eswatini did well to achieve COVID-19 vaccine coverage of above 70% among people 40 years and older, overall coverage as a proportion of the general population remained low, at 36.9%, at the end of June 2023. For younger people, aged between 12 and 39, coverage remained low at below 50%, negatively impacting the country’s efforts to meet WHO’s global 70% target.
