A chief in Swaziland has gone to the High Court to stop
his subjects holding a public meeting without his permission.
In Swaziland chiefs are directly appointed by King Mswati
III to their local chiefdoms and they represent his power. King Mswati
meanwhile rules as sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarch.
Chief Zululelihle Maseko, of the KaLuhleko area, wants the Swazi High Court to stop six of his subjects from calling community
meetings without his consent.
In papers to the court, Maseko states the meetings are unlawful
and undermine his authority.
Maseko makes it clear in his papers that he was appointed
by the king and if his subjects do not like this they should take it up with
the king.
