LIMKOKWING WAITS FOR SWAZI CASH

The Malaysian-based Limkokwing University says it will open in Swaziland on 23 May, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

It had recently promised to open on 8 April 2011, but it didn’t happen.

The university that has been criticised in its other African campuses (Lesotho and Botswana) for the poor quality service it delivers to students says it is waiting for the Swazi Government to pay the scholarships for students it had promised.

The government announced in January 2011 that it would sponsor up to 800 students. This could cost the kingdom as much as E16 million (US$2.1 million) a year.

But, the government is broke. Yesterday (10 May 2011), it was revealed that it would not be able to pay public servants’ salaries in June and the months after. It is touch-and-go whether it will be able to pay salaries in May.

The Swazi Observer today reported Ida Mazlan, Limkokwing Director of Academic International Management, saying everything was set for the institution to start operation.

Limkokwing has caused controversy for the poor quality of its teaching staff and courses.
