UNION DEMANDS: CABINET GO NOW!

The Swazi Government must resign immediately, following its confession that it cannot pay public sector salaries, a civil service union has demanded.

For months, since the Swaziland economic meltdown became public, the government has said it can pay salaries and it will make this a priority.

Yesterday, Majozi Sithole, the Swazi Finance Minister for the past ten years, went on state-run radio SBIS to admit the money wasn’t there. There was a chance salaries might be paid this month (May 2011), but no chance they would in June and beyond.

Vincent Dlamini, Secretary General of the National Public Servants and Allied Workers Union (NAPSAWU), said the announcement showed the cabinet could not manage the kingdom’s resources.

‘They have failed to manage resources of this country. Our recommendation to them is to do the honourable thing and resign,’ he told the Times of Swaziland.

‘They must be out of office by May and not wait for June.’

Muzi Mhlanga, Secretary General of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT), told the newspaper, ‘We do not really believe government does not have money. Government priorities are not in order. Nothing has been communicated to us and this will be our next item on the agenda.’
