‘We’re not asking for new rights’: eSwatini LGBTQ+ rights group continues registration court battle

By Luiz De Barros, Mamba Online (South Africa), 30 July 2026

SOURCE

Years after a landmark Supreme Court victory, Eswatini LGBTQ+ group ESGM says the government is still refusing to recognise its right to exist.

Eswatini’s leading LGBTQ+ rights organisation has taken another step in its years-long legal battle for official recognition after filing a reply in the High Court challenging the government’s continued refusal to register the group.

Eswatini Sexual and Gender Minorities (ESGM) announced on Thursday that it had submitted its replying affidavit in the case of Simelane (N.O.) & Others v Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade & Others, paving the way for the matter to be set down for hearing.

The latest development comes despite a unanimous 2023 Supreme Court ruling that declared the original refusal to register ESGM unconstitutional and ordered the decision to be reconsidered. Instead, the Minister of Commerce again rejected the application, prompting the current court challenge.

In court papers, the Minister has defended the decision by arguing that ESGM has an unlawful purpose, that its name is misleading or morally offensive, and that it promotes conduct criminalised under Eswatini’s laws. The Minister also contends that customary law does not recognise same-sex relationships.

ESGM rejects those arguments, describing the refusal as irrational and unrelated to the purpose of the Companies Act.

The organisation argues that it exists to promote and protect the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people in Eswatini and notes that sexual orientation itself is not a criminal offence in the country.

According to the applicants, advocating for people who experience discrimination is entirely lawful, while customary law has no bearing on a constitutional right to form an association representing a shared community interest.

ESGM further argues that refusing registration reinforces stigma by signalling that LGBTQ+ people are not entitled to organise, advocate or express themselves on equal terms with other citizens.

“We are not asking for special treatment”

Melusi Simelane, founder and Board Chairperson of ESGM, said the organisation’s struggle has always been about equal constitutional rights rather than special privileges.

“When we founded ESGM, it was because LGBTI emaSwati had nowhere to turn — no organisation that could stand up for them openly and lawfully. Seven years and a unanimous Supreme Court judgment later, we are still being asked to justify our existence.”

Health Minister flags obesity surge

By Sifiso Nhlabatsi. eSwatini Positive News, 29 July 2026

SOURCE

MBABANE: Minister of Health Mduduzi Matsebula has raised concern over the rapid increase in overweight, obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Eswatini.

The minister has warned that poor nutrition is becoming one of the country’s biggest public health threats.

Speaking during the official opening of the Eswatini Food and Nutrition Policy and Nutrition Bill Validation Workshop at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel in Mbabane on Wednesday, the minister said while the country continues to battle undernutrition and stunting among children, it is also experiencing a worrying surge in overweight and obesity across all age groups.

He said the increase in obesity has been accompanied by a rise in diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular conditions, placing additional pressure on the country’s healthcare system.

“Our country faces a complex triple burden of malnutrition,” Matsebula said. “On one hand, we continue to combat undernutrition and stunting, particularly among our young children, which quietly robs them of their physical and cognitive potential. On the other hand, we are witnessing a rapid rise in overweight, obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases across all age groups.”

The minister said the growing burden of malnutrition requires urgent and coordinated action beyond the health sector. He noted that nutrition is closely linked to agriculture, education, social protection and economic development, making it a national development issue rather than solely a health concern.

He said food and nutrition are fundamental to human dignity, economic prosperity and sustainable development, adding that a healthy and well-nourished population is essential if Eswatini is to achieve its long-term development aspirations.

Crime rate up by 4.6% in first quarter

By Nokuphila Haji, eSwatini Observer, 27 July 2026

SOURCE

The country recorded a 4.6 per cent increase in crime during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, with police expressing concern over rising cases of murder, robbery, copper theft and housebreaking.

According to the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) first-quarter performance report, covering the period from April to June, the overall crime volume increased from 13 604 cases recorded during the same period last year to 14 237 cases this year.

The report indicates that murder cases increased from 31 to 34, representing a 9.7 per cent rise.

Armed robbery also increased significantly, with 52 cases recorded compared to 44 during the corresponding period last year, reflecting an 18.2 per cent increase.

Robbery cases rose slightly from 486 to 500, an increase of 2.9 per cent, while copper theft increased by 4.1 per cent, from 418 cases to 435.

Housebreaking and theft cases also increased, with 1 570 incidents reported compared to 1 530 during the same period last year, representing a 2.6 per cent increase.

Despite the overall increase in crime, the police reported declines in several offences, including fraud, stock theft, motor vehicle theft and car robbery.

The service attributed the reductions to intensified policing strategies, including visible policing, public education campaigns and strengthened partnerships with stakeholders.

The report, however, indicated that murder, copper wire theft, robbery and housebreaking remained areas of concern, with police pledging to intensify interventions to curb the crimes.

Chief Justice Bheki Maphalala says Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) will never succeed in securing warrants of arrest as long as Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini other politicians interfere with its independence

By Musa Mdluli, Swaziland News, 27 July 2026

SOURCE

MBABANE: Chief Justice Bheki Maphalala has stated categorically clear that, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) will never succeed in securing warrants of arrest for as long as Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini and other politicians “interfere with it’s independence”.

The Head of the Judiciary was addressing a press conference on Monday in Mbabane after the Prime Minister told Parliament that efforts to fight corruption are being undermined by the CJ’s refusal to sign warrants of arrest.

But the Chief Justice said “it’s not true that efforts to fight corruption are undermined by him instead, he blamed the PM and other politicians for interfering with the independence” of the ACC.

“Politicians must stay away from the ACC, that Commission will never function properly for as long as politicians are interfering with its independence”, said the Chief Justice.

On another note, the CJ emphasized the importance of respecting the Constitution and fundamental human rights, he said people cannot be jailed without sufficient evidence.

Until when will emaSwati suffer from brutal land evictions?

Comment by Emmanuel Ndlangamandla, Times of eSwatini, 27 July 2026

SOURCE

Once again, we woke up to the devastating news of another family eviction. The heartbreaking demolition of a family homestead valued at E450 000 at KaNcesi serves as yet another painful reminder of the deep-seated crisis of land tenure and forced evictions plaguing our nation.

Overnight, life savings, sweat and hard-earned security were reduced to rubble. A family has been left homeless, exposed to harsh weather conditions, insecure about their belongings; children face an uncertain future, which will bear deeper psychological scars way into their adulthood, and families are stripped of their human dignity, which is assured in the national Constitution.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident; it is part of a recurring pattern where ordinary emaSwati are systematically dispossessed, displaced and cast into severe poverty under the shadow of heavy machinery and police enforcement of court orders.

A nation built on fragile ground cannot stand. For far too long, the people of Eswatini in Swazi Nation Land have lived under constant anxiety.

Despite customary allocations and substantial investments made by citizens to build homes for their families, the lack of formal, legally protected security of tenure leaves everyday families vulnerable to sudden court orders, elite land grabs and ruthless bulldozing.

When a E450000 home can be flattened in a single morning without alternative accommodation provided, we must confront the urgent question facing our society: Until when will emaSwati suffer this brutal injustice?

While the deputy prime minister (DPM) and government are busy restoring the dignity of some emaSwati who lack decent shelter, a family that has used all its savings to build a decent home now joins thousands of emaSwati who are hoping for the housing project initiative by the DPM’s Office to reach them.

This action is indeed counterproductive. It further undermines the country’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goals, where global leaders, including Eswatini, committed to ‘leave no one behind’.

Let us recall that Eswatini is a constitutional State, with a Bill of Rights. Under the Bill of Rights, Section 19 guarantees every person the right to own property, either alone or in association with others. The Constitution protects from compulsory deprivation of property, meaning government cannot seize land or property interests unless:

It is necessary for public use, defence, safety, order or health.

The acquisition is made under a law that provides for the prompt payment of fair and adequate compensation.

The affected person is granted access to a court of law.

The Constitution unveiled by the King at Sibaya, the sacred institution in our cultural and traditional context, was a promissory note that emaSwati rights from henceforth will be guaranteed and protected.

The Constitution has been in place for over 20 years now, but emaSwati continue to suffer the pain of evictions, which leaves families with loss of many years of investment in constructing a house.

No development, administrative process, or private dispute justifies rendering human beings homeless. In alignment with fundamental human rights and international standards, we call for:

An immediate moratorium on forced evictions is required, where there would be a complete freeze on all land evictions and home demolitions across Eswatini until comprehensive legal and procedural safeguards are enacted.

Also critical is urgent legal land reforms where Parliament and relevant authorities must urgently reform land tenure laws to grant secure, enforceable title rights to ordinary citizens living on both Swazi Nation Land and peri-urban areas.

Over 900 asylum seekers registered at Malindza

By Nokuphila Haji, eSwatini Observer, 2 January 2025

SOURCE

A total of 911 asylum seekers had been registered at the Malindza refugee camp as of January 1, 2025.

This was shared by Prime Minister Russell Dlamini in a statement. Dlamini said the number of asylum seekers remained relatively low and stable between November to December 14.

These were the times that the riots started in Mozambique, which was slightly after the election results were announced.

The prime minister said the daily count of asylum seekers arriving in the country then were not exceeding 23 arrivals per day.

He said a significant increase in arrivals had been observed from December 15, highlighting that the daily counts were reaching 399 arrivals on December 29.

Dlamini said it was important to note that the above figures only accounted for those who sought to be registered and requested to be accommodated at the Malindza refugee Camp.
Following the unrest that erupted in recent months in the neighbouring Republic of Mozambique, the Kingdom of Eswatini has experienced an influx of asylum seekers entering the country from Mozambique.

These asylum seekers comprise of all gender and demographic groups,” he said.

Dlamini also noted the surge in the number of asylum seekers entering the country. He said following an assessment of the situation conducted on December 27 by the different stakeholders who were led by the ministry of home affairs, a high-level meeting was convened at the Private and Cabinet offices to deliberate on the influx of individuals seeking refuge within the country’s borders.

“The meeting considered the situation updates provided by the different stakeholders, the camp assessment report highlighting the needs for essential supplies, shelter conditions, water supply and sanitation and hygiene facilities and a draft response plan,” he said.

He said it was, therefore, important for the country to re-emphasise government’s commitment to upholding human dignity and international humanitarian principles. He said government was ready to extend protection and support to those fleeing the disturbances.

285 cases on Anti-Corruption Commission’s hands

By Ntombi Mhlongo, eSwatini News, 28 December 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: As per its mandate of being an entity that receives and investigates complaints of alleged or suspected corrupt practices, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has closed the year with about 285 cases on its hands.

This was revealed by the Prime Minister, Russell Mmiso Dlamini when he delivered government’s end-of-year progress report at Cabinet. The PM stated that corruption is one of the major issues that were raised at Sibaya. He said the King further charged government to bring to book all the corrupt, with particular emphasis on the ‘big fish’ (bobhabuli).

The PM said corruption makes it difficult for the state to function. He said in response to the directive from The Throne and Sibaya, government did many things to support the fight against corruption, one of them being establishing the Anti-Corruption Task Team, comprising the police, the ACC and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

He shared that to further support the team, 10 police officers will be earmarked for deployment to the ACC to assist in the investigation and ultimate prosecution of the corrupt. “Government has also requested for technical assistance from the international community to strengthen investigation and prosecution capacity of the country’s anti-corruption institutions. Government remains tenacious to eliminate this scourge that is throttling the economy,” the PM said.

He highlighted that government intensified the fight against corruption with 285 cases being investigated by the ACC and several warrants of arrests issued and six arrests were made. About 37 of the corruption cases, the PM said, are being processed within the court system.

eSwatini secures major AfDB loan for economic growth following credit rating upgrade

By Zweli Martin Dlamini, Sunday Independent (South Africa), 29 December 2024

SOURCE

eSwatini Prime Minister Russell Dlamini has announced that the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a loan of approximately $140.6 million (about R2.4 billion) for infrastructure development aimed at stimulating the country's economy.

This funding will specifically focus on improving road infrastructure in the Lubombo and Shiselweni regions, which are critical for enhancing connectivity and supporting socio-economic development.

During a media briefing at the cabinet offices in Mbabane, Dlamini delivered the Government’s One Year in Office Performance Report. He stated: “The government charged the Ministry of Finance to expedite a national borrowing plan to direct resources to optimal investment. The AfDB’s approval of this loan is a significant step towards our infrastructure goals.”

Dlamini highlighted that the government had initiated a comprehensive review of its procurement system to eliminate bottlenecks and ensure cost-effectiveness in service delivery.

He acknowledged that efficient service delivery could not be achieved under the current limitations of the Procurement Act of 2011.

Additionally, he reported that the government had successfully reduced its debt to local companies from E2.8bn to about E700m, indicating that 75% of pending arrears were cleared within the year. This reduction is part of broader efforts to stabilise the economy.

A notable highlight from Dlamini's address was eSwatini’s recent credit rating upgrade by Moody’s Investors Service, which raised the country’s long-term local-currency and foreign-currency issuer ratings from B3 to B2.

No FPE, some schools without water, electricity on first day

By Sithembile Hlatshwayo, Times of eSwatini, 11 September 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: The delay in the payment of free primary education (FPE) grant has seen some schools go without water and electricity, among other things.

Other schools say they fear that the available food will be finished in the coming two weeks and are crossing their fingers for the Ministry of Education and Training to intervene.

The ministry stated that the food delivered to schools before they closed for the second term will last them at least 30 days, hence it is not an issue as deliveries are expected to be made in two weeks. True to the sentiments shared by Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) Secretary General Lot Vilakati, schools were not ready to reopen yesterday.

In other schools, since they do not have money to buy petroleum gas, they are unable to cook the limited food they have.

Fonteyn Primary School Deputy Head teacher Nomcebo Mamba said the school is in arrears of E5 444.80 for an outstanding water bill, while their electricity units were exhausted about two weeks ago. Mamba said they had no idea of what to do as they were hoping that the Ministry of Education would come to their rescue. “We are expecting representatives from the ministry today (Tuesday 11, 2024) who will be introducing our new head teacher,” Mamba said.

The school has been without a head teacher since July 2024. Mamba said they were in the dark regarding the financials of the school, hence they were also in the dark on whether they received the FPE grant or not. According to Mamba, the school is also struggling with some of the working tools, including charts. She said they reported the matter to the school committee and pastoral inspector. Mater Dolorosa (MDS) Primary School Head teacher Thabo Nkambule said they were looking forward to the ministry supplying them with food in the next two weeks as the remaining food will is not enough.

Chinese roots deepen in Africa’s last Taiwan holdout

By Cebelihle Mbuyisa, Semafor, 10 September 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: China is building up its business and economic interests in Eswatini in a sign that Taiwan’s last African ally is gradually pivoting towards Beijing.

The southern African country was the only one of Africa’s 54 countries that declined to attend last week’s triennial China-Africa summit in Beijing. The kingdom of Eswatini has long refused to cut ties with Taiwan — even when Beijing has explicitly threatened to cut all trade with the African country because of it.

But, despite that official snub last week, members of the Eswatini’s business community told Semafor Africa that authorities are quietly warming to China. It is forcing Taipei to face up to the reality that Chinese enterprises, business people, and even state players are digging deep roots in the kingdom’s economy.

Taiwan’s ambassador to Eswatini, Jeremy Liang, told Semafor Africa that “a significant number of Chinese nationals” were pouring into the small landlocked country of 1.2 million people which would, in time, “undermine” his country’s special relationship with the kingdom.

In another sign of thawing relations with Beijing, a delegation led by the head of Eswatini’s mines authority Guduza Dlamini travelled to China with a high-profile local businessman in late 2023, reportedly to engage Chinese investors and to chart a way for the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Government spokesman Alpheous Nxumalo denied that the delegation’s mission had been to begin the process of establishing diplomatic relations.

And it’s not just private business people. Eswatini’s government in May 2023 awarded the state-owned PowerChina a $165 million tender to construct the vital Mpakeni Embankment Dam even while noting in a statement that Eswatini had “yet to establish diplomatic relations with China” it had recognized PowerChina for “its brand influence in the southern African region.”

Prime Minister, Acting Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Commissioner investigating Chief Justice Bheki Maphalala amid power struggle, want King Mswati to remove him

By Zweli Martin Dlamini, Swaziland News, 6 September, 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: Maphevu Mkhatjwa, the Acting Commissioner of the Anti Corruption Commission(ACC) has written a letter to the Managing Director of the Eswatini Financial Intelligence Unit(EFIU) requesting financial transactions for Chief Justice Bheki Maphalala amid a power struggle with Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini and the ACC Acting Commissioner.

It has been disclosed that, the plot to investigate and subsequently arrest the CJ was orchestrated by the ACC Acting Commissioner, the Chief Justice who doubles as Chairman of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is alleged to be refusing to endorse the appointment of Mkhatjwa as ACC Commissioner and as a result, Mkhatjwa is alleged to have asked the PM to assist him remove the Chief Justice.

“The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) is seized with investigation referenced as Enquiry file number 09/2024. The basis of the investigation relates to allegations of corruption that the above mentioned individual is suspected to be receiving bribes from members of the public seeking jobs in the judiciary and/or from those who had applied for judicial appointments. Therefore, in an effort to pursue the investigation we hereby request for your cooperation by providing us with his financial profile, assets profile and any information that you deem necessary to bring to our attention. We will further request your institution to provide us with analysis on the flow of funds in respect of entities and/or parties that are and may be connected with this investigation. The processing of this matter should be treated with confidentiality as outlined in section 18 of the POCA”, reads the letter in part allegedly signed by the ACC Acting Commissioner.

The documents further suggest that, the Chief Justice was investigated by Chief Investigator Sipho Mthethwa and Assistant Superintendent Clement Sifiso Khumalo who is currently working for the ACC on secondment.

But a source within the State Intelligence Unit told this Swaziland News on Thursday that, the power struggle erupted after the Chief Justice made moves to recommend the appointment of Deputy Commissioner Lillian Zwane as the new Commissioner of the ACC yet Maphevu Mkhatjwa, a police officer, is also eyeing the position.

The Prevention of Corruption Act states clearly that, a person may be appointed as ACC Commissioner if that person qualifies to be a Judge of the High Court.

It has been disclosed that, the ACC was investigating Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini on allegations of corruption and/or looting of public funds within the Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), he was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) when over R200million public and donated funds allegedly disappeared within the State entity.

But shortly after being appointed as the Prime Minister, Russell Mmiso Dlamini allegedly summoned and captured the ACC, he subsequently announced the establishment of a Task Team that will report to him.

SADC’S betrayal of the people of Swaziland

SSN statement, 7 September 2024

SOURCE

The Swaziland Solidarity Network (SSN) is deeply disheartened and outraged by the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) decision to remove the Swaziland political crisis from its agenda. This is a betrayal of the citizens of Swaziland and the entire region, shutting down any hope that the regional body might take meaningful steps toward promoting democracy, human rights, and lasting peace in Swaziland.

Swaziland rightly entered SADC’s focus through the Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation following the brutal suppression of a peaceful nationwide campaign for political reform in June 2021. Since then, the government’s repression has only escalated. Over 100 Swazis have been killed, countless others disabled, and entire communities have been terrorized by state-sponsored violence.

These crimes carried out under the watchful eyes of SADC, have been perpetrated with the aid of mercenaries from South Africa and Russia. Despite this well-documented brutality, SADC has chosen to turn its back on the people of Swaziland, prioritizing other issues over the lives and rights of Swazi citizens.

SADC’s inaction is a direct betrayal of its own values and stated mission. The body claims to promote democracy, good governance, and respect for human rights as foundational principles for regional integration. Yet it has repeatedly failed to address the autocratic rule of Mswati whose government operates under a perpetual state of emergency that has been in place since April 12, 1973.

The contradiction between SADC’s lofty ambitions and its passivity in Swaziland is impossible to ignore. The regional body’s unwillingness to act undermines its credibility and casts doubt on its ability to achieve the political and economic integration it aspires to. It is clear that a region governed by democratically elected leaders cannot fully integrate a country ruled by an absolute monarch without compromising those democratic principles.

SADC’s mission to maintain peace and security has similarly failed, as the body waits for conflicts to explode before taking action, rather than addressing the root causes of unrest. The ongoing crisis in Swaziland is a testament to this failure.

What is most shocking, however, is the fact that nearly every country in SADC is a functioning democracy. This means that unlike Mswati, the other regional leaders owe their power to their citizens, to whom they are accountable. Yet by ignoring the cries of the Swazi people, they are betraying not only the citizens of Swaziland but their own citizens as well.

The actions of these leaders reflect either a deep betrayal or a profound misunderstanding of the aspirations of their own people. Across the region, opposition parties, civic organizations, and ordinary citizens have expressed their solidarity with the people of Swaziland and condemned the royal tyranny. Even a few incumbent SADC leaders have recognized the urgent need for change.

The people of Swaziland are not asking for charity or intervention without reason. They are determined to free themselves from the yoke of a regime that has consistently violated their human rights and subjected them to violence and terror. What they need is the moral support of the region, and for SADC to uphold its own principles by acknowledging these abuses. At the very least, SADC must suspend Swaziland’s participation in the body until it meets the basic criteria for governance and human dignity.

We, therefore, call upon all grassroots organizations across the region to unite and form a coalition that will lobby for SADC to suspend Swaziland and urge other global institutions to impose targeted sanctions against the regime. The time for passive condemnation has passed. The region must stand with the people of Swaziland in their pursuit of freedom and justice, and send a clear message to Mswati’s regime that its crimes will no longer be tolerated.

Army ready to prevent unrest - minister

By Siboniso Nkambule, Times of eSwatini, 27 August 2024

SOURCE

LOBAMBA: The Acting Minister of National Defence and Security, Pholile Shakantu, has assured senators that the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) remains vigilant to prevent a recurrence of the June 2021 unrest. While emphasising the military’s readiness, Shakantu highlighted that the true priority lies in fostering peace among emaSwati. She also stressed the importance of promoting peace across all sectors of the nation’s structures, urging collective efforts to ensure stability. This was disclosed yesterday, when the Ministry of National Defence and Security was presenting its first quarter performance report for the year 2024/25 financial year before its Senate portfolio committee.

The committee members had questioned the minister about the army’s readiness to protect the country against foreign elements that would want to disturb peace. Senator Fezeka Dlamini said there were elements that infiltrated the country in 2021.Dlamini asked for the ministry’s assurance, questioning what they were doing to ensure that what happened during the June 2021 unrest was not repeated. She said emaSwati love peace and they appreciate it in the country. Adding, Dlamini mentioned that they were happy to see that the national airspace was safeguarded, both in peace and wartime. She, however, raised concerns about the aircraft that need to undergo major servicing, but due to a lack of budget, that mandate was not achieved.

International team of investigative journalists to take over human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko’s assassination case as a ‘special project’

By Musa Mdluli, Swaziland News, 28 August, 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: A team of highly skilled international investigative journalists is expected to commence a high-level investigation into human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko’s assassination.

This was confirmed by Zweli Martin Dlamini, the editor of this Swaziland News who urged the public to assist in ensuring the success of the investigation.

“I was contacted two weeks ago by an international human rights organization and formally informed that, the investigation by the international investigative journalists will commence soon. We urge the public to assist the journalists with any information, potential sources will be contacted anonymously and the journalists are skilled in the gathering of information and protection of sources”, said the editor.

Dlamini said the assassination of the human rights lawyer, remains an unresolved case of international interest, he urged more human rights organizations, including those under the United Nations (UN), to consider commissioning more independent investigations to investigate the death of the lawyer.

Maseko, the Chairperson of the pro-democracy MultiStakeholder Forum (MSF) was assassinated at the peak of the political unrest and, at the time, he was preparing for a political dialogue as recommended by the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

eSwatini to roll out first women-controlled HIV prevention product

News Release, IPPF, 26 August 2024

SOURCE

IPPF’s [International Planned Parenthood Federation] Member Association in Eswatini, the Family Life Association of Eswatini (FLAS), is soon to roll out the first women-controlled HIV prevention product, the dapivirine vaginal ring (DVR). FLAS will be among the first organisations to offer the DVR outside implementation or pilot studies anywhere in the world. Made of flexible silicone, the ring is inserted into the vagina by a woman and slowly releases the antiretroviral drug dapivirine in the vagina over a one-month period, helping to reduce a woman’s risk of acquiring HIV.

In 2023, in sub-Saharan Africa, women and girls accounted for 62% of all new HIV infections and every week, 3100 adolescent girls and young women aged 15–24 years [LM5] became infected with HIV. Therefore, there continues to be an urgent need for HIV prevention methods that females can use to protect themselves.

The DVR is a product women can control themselves and use without the knowledge or consent of their partners, unlike condoms, which men often refuse to use. The DVR is inserted into the vagina and left for a one-month period, where it can then be replaced each month for continued protection. Unlike daily oral PrEP, the DVR does not rely on remembering to take a pill each day and is also discreet as it stays inside the vagina throughout the month.

The DVR does not prevent pregnancy or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so women choosing to use the ring may want to consider combining it with condoms and methods of contraception.

The availability of the DVR is an exciting step in supporting women’s autonomy and choice in HIV prevention. This need for women-controlled HIV prevention products has long been advocated for, with the African Women Prevention Community Accountability Board launching the HIV Prevention Choice Manifesto in early 2023. The Choice Manifesto prioritises the principle of choice to ensure that women and girls have the right to choose which HIV prevention methods work for them. Currently the ring is available at selected facilities through implementation studies across six countries in East and Southern Africa; South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini, and Uganda.

Arrests looming in home affairs investigation

By Ntombi Mhlongo, Times Sunday, 25 August 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: The net is closing in on civil servants who are implicated in the fraudulent activities at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

This is because the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which has been conducting investigations, has reportedly completed its work. This publication has gathered that the ACC has completed its work and around 10 officers are set to face the music. Having concluded the investigation, it was gathered that ACC officers were already working on an application to obtain warrants of arrests for the implicated individuals. Sources revealed that if all goes according to plan, the arrests would be effected in the next coming days. Called for comment, ACC Acting Commissioner Maphevu Mkhatjwa said while the commission has completed its investigation, he could not say when the arrests would be effected. Mkhatjwa argued that it was not wise to reveal anything, as such would jeopardise whatever investigation they carried out. He then referred this reporter to ACC Spokesperson Jabu Phakathi who, however, told this reporter that she was not aware of any planned arrests.

Phakathi reminded this reporter that the entity operates within the ambit of the law which prohibits the disclosure of information or details of any person who is the subject of an enquiry or investigation. The ACC has a three-pronged legal mandate of prevention whereby it is supposed to examine practices and procedures and advice on ways of preventing corruption.

It also has an education role of empowering the public and private bodies and the general public on the forms and dangers of corruption.  Furthermore, the ACC has the function of investigation which is to receive and investigate complaints of alleged or suspected corrupt practices made against any person, and refer appropriate cases to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
