Justice for every victim of 2021 but are we ready for the full truth?

Editorial comment, Swazi Bridge, 28 October 2026

SOURCE

This week, officials from the Attorney General’s office will fly to the United Nations offices in Geneva to explain what has become of the investigation into the murder of human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko. Earlier this week Swazi Bridge reported that government has been forced to write a comprehensive response to the UN human rights body on the progress, or the lack thereof, on finding out what happened to Maseko. The message could not be clearer. The world has not forgotten Thulani. More than three years after his death, it still wants answers. On Sunday Swazi Bridge also reported on the confessions of the killers of Thulani Maseko.

Our story put Maseko’s assassination back on the national agenda. Judging by the feedback, this country has not found closure. Our people still wants to know who killed Thulani and why. Two reactions, from the barrage on social media and emails, stood out for us though. The first came from the leader of one of the banned political parties. His comment was buried deep among many, but it stands out because of who he is and what he proposed. The people who can bring us real answers, he proposed, are the FBI, (or independent investigators of FBI calibre).

That is a sharp observation, and a hard one to argue with. The second came from a senator, who had previously asked why we always isolate Thulani Maseko when we talk about the violence of 2021 and never the victims of the progressives’ violence. In particular, why does the media never demand justice for Chief Prince Mahloma of Zandondo, who was savagely killed by members of the Swaziland International Solidarity Forces (SISF)? Here is the dichotomy: Maseko was a prominent and popular leader of the progressives while Prince Mahloma was a revered member of the royal family. The senator’s complaint therefore is that the focus on only one is unfair. That is a fair criticism, and it deserves an answer, not a shrug.

Anyone who follows the progressives’ arguments can understand their frustration. Many people were killed by the police and army as the state tried to crush the 2021 uprising. The day the full scale of that brutality is revealed, many people will be embarrassed they cheer led the government. Consider, for example, the four boys killed by soldiers at Lobamba. They were not protesting. They were not burning anything. They were boys, and they are dead. Consider the young boy captured in the documentary “The Unthinkable”, who is today paralysed. Consider the woman who was allegedly burnt in a fire and spent almost two years in a South African hospital.

To this day she has received no justice. There are unconfirmed reports that some people were thrown into the fires at the Matsapha breweries. Their stories lie buried under the forced silence and the pretence of normalcy that has followed 2021. They are not the only ones. The eSwatini Solidarity Fund documentary managed to trace and document many people who were shot, killed and assaulted by the police and army. A full and transparent investigation by “the FBI”, as the party leader suggested, would expose the true scale of the state led terrorism. We have already heard confessions from the defecting police and correctional services officers who describe the nights they went out to kill, and who came back to recount it in the camps.

Yet the country never conducted a full investigation that could help us all heal. Many of the soldiers and police who were ordered to kill are mentally disturbed or depressed today because haunted by what they were made to do. Sadly the low ranking junior officers men who did the dirty work for the authorities carry the scars, and have nowhere to lay down the guilt, the pain and the moral weight of it and are to this day refused their legitimate salary adjustment.

1 516 girls drop out of school due to pregnancy

By Timothy Simelane, Times of eSwatini, 27 October 2026

SOURCE

MBABANE: A total of 1 516 girls left school due to pregnancy between 2023 and 2025, while the number of reported violence cases in schools increased from 45 in 2023 to 204 in 2024–2025.

This has raised concerns about learner protection and retention in Eswatini’s education system.

The figures are contained in a presentation on the Guidance and Counselling Programme, delivered by Acting Director of Guidance Londiwe Ngci Dube during the 2026 Education Joint Sector Review (JSR) Indaba, held at Sibane Sami from October 26 to 28.

According to the presentation, the number of primary school girls who left school due to pregnancy increased from 88 in 2023 to 180 in 2025, representing a rise of about 105 per cent. At secondary school level, the figure increased from 964 to 1 336 over the same period, a 39 per cent increase.

The presentation warned that pregnancy was the leading recorded reason for school dropout, while other reasons, including abuse at home, substance use and bullying, also increased.

The figures are counts rather than dropout rates, and the presentation cautioned that some of the increase could be attributed to improved reporting. It said enrolment figures were needed to calculate accurate dropout rates.

The presentation was made under the JSR’s deep dive into equitable access, participation and inclusion. During the ongoing Education Sector Review at Sibane Sami Hotel.  It assessed progress in guidance and counselling services against the Education Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP) 2022–2034, particularly the commitment to assist learners at risk of dropping out.

graduation Ceremony at Kwaluseni Campus (Pic: Lucky Simelane)

His Majesty King Mswati III has called for the implementation of the No Hungry Student Project at the University of Eswatini to ensure students receive the nutritional support they need.

The king outlined challenges facing the institution and called for measures to support students.

He said the project should be implemented to ensure learners had access to the nutritional support they needed while pursuing their studies.

The call formed part of His Majesty’s wider remarks on the need to improve conditions at the university as it continues to educate young people and contribute to national development.

The King also highlighted the challenge of student accommodation, saying only 2 900 out of 9 000 students had access to on-campus housing.

He said the majority were left in potentially unsafe off-campus situations and called for public-private partnerships to address the housing challenge.

His Majesty said UNESWA required E1 billion in capital investment to modernise teaching spaces, expand ICT facilities and enhance security measures.

He encouraged public and private sector partners to continue supporting the university through infrastructure funding, research grants and technology transfer.

UN advances inclusion at Ekwetsembeni special school

By Gcwalisile Mhlabane, eSwatini Positive News, 27 October 2026

SOURCE

EKWETSEMBENI: The United Nations (UN) has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities through a visit to Ekwetsembeni Special School, where learners received staple food donations and support towards essential plumbing repairs.

The visit, held on October 26, 2026, brought together UN representatives, learners, teachers, caregivers and school leadership for a day centred on solidarity, inclusion and the shared responsibility of ensuring that no one is left behind.

The UN family donated staple food items and contributed towards plumbing repairs to support the school’s daily operations and the wellbeing of learners. The contributions reflected the collective commitment of the UN system, alongside the generosity of individual staff members.

Speaking on behalf of UN staff, Staff Federation President Zanele Thabede emphasised the importance of solidarity and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.

“Building inclusive communities requires all of us to stand together and ensure that persons with disabilities are treated with dignity, afforded equal opportunities and supported to participate meaningfully in society,” Thabede said.

She stressed that inclusion should extend beyond words to practical actions that address the needs of vulnerable groups and ensure that everyone feels valued in their communities.

UN Resident Coordinator George Wachira reaffirmed that inclusion and equality are central to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“The promise of the 2030 Agenda is clear: to leave no one behind. This means ensuring that everyone, including persons with disabilities, has the opportunity to live with dignity and access the support they need to thrive,” Wachira said.

He emphasised that building a just and compassionate society requires collective responsibility, meaningful partnerships and deliberate efforts to address the needs of people who require additional support.

Wachira also paid tribute to Ekwetsembeni Special School’s teachers and caregivers for their dedication, patience and compassion in creating a nurturing environment where learners can develop their abilities and reach their full potential.

King Mswati allegedly backed by the United States to maintain diplomatic ties with Taiwan

By Zweli Martin Dlamini, Swaziland News, 26 October 2026

SOURCE

MBABANE: King Mswati is allegedly backed by the United States (US) to maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan; an Island historically regarded as a Chinese Province and in terms of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2758 of 1971.

It has been disclosed that, the US now regards Eswatini as a key strategic diplomatic partner in southern Africa amid deteriorating relations with the neighbouring South Africa.
As a result, diplomatic relations were strengthened with Eswatini by the current United States President Donald Trump administration.

But two ‘political competitors’ in the US have different views or positions regarding the issue of Eswatini, President Barack Obama’s Democrats political party has been vigorously supporting the calls for democratic reforms in the Sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute Monarchy while President Donald Trump’s Republicans “supports the Monarchy and/or the current ruling Tinkhundla system of Government in the Kingdom”.

Lawyer forces ‘Times of eSwatini’ to correct social media post declaring ‘Messi the greatest footballer of all time’

By Bongiwe Dlamini, Swaziland News, 8 October 2026

SOURCE

MBABANE: Lawyer Kuhle Mabuza-Dlamini has successfully forced the Times of Eswatini to edit its social media post, declaring Lionel Messi, the “greatest footballer of all time”.

The lawyer posted on her social media page that, saying she “is blocking the Times for feeding the Nation with subjective opinions not facts” she suggested that the reporting was supposed to read; “one of the greatest footballer of all time is retiring” reminding journalists that their reporting should be based on facts not their own opinion.

The debate on who is the ‘greatest’ between Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo has been a ‘headache’ for journalists not only in Eswatini but around the world as fans “are very sensitive and expect the media to be fair between the retiring greatest footballers”.

The Times subsequently corrected their reporting to “one of the greatest footballer of all time, Argentina’s Captain Lionel Messi, played his last official match for the National Team this morning”.

Lawyer Kuhle Mabuza-Dlamini who commands a huge following on social media, subsequently welcomed the correction saying; she will “now unblock and follow the Times again”.

MBABANE:  Three Third Country Nationals sent to Eswatini under a bilateral arrangement with the United States have voluntarily returned home.

Government confirmed on Wednesday that the three nationals, from Yemen, Belize and Laos, requested to leave Eswatini and reunite with their families.

Acting Government Spokesperson Thabile Mdluli, in a statement, conveyed that three Third Country Nationals (TCNs), who arrived in the Kingdom under the existing bilateral arrangement with the Government of the United States of America, have voluntarily departed the Kingdom and returned to their respective countries of origin at different intervals in recent weeks.

She said the first TCN, a national of Yemen, voluntarily departed the Kingdom on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, following his request to return to his country of origin.

Mdluli said: “The second TCN, a national of Belize, voluntarily departed the Kingdom on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, following his request to return home. The third TCN, a national of Laos, voluntarily departed the Kingdom on Sunday, October 4, 2026, also following his request for voluntary repatriation to his country of origin.”

These departures, she said, form part of the ongoing arrangements concerning TCNs temporarily residing in the Kingdom. Mdluli said government continues to engage with the relevant authorities and partners to facilitate requests for voluntary repatriation, where made, in accordance with the applicable arrangements and procedures.

She conveyed government’s appreciation to the countries and relevant authorities that have cooperated with the Kingdom in facilitating the transit of the TCNs as they travelled to their respective countries of origin.

Such cooperation, she said, has contributed to the smooth and orderly facilitation of their journeys home. Mdluli reiterated Eswatini’s commitment to ensuring that the rights, dignity and well-being of TCNs are respected and protected throughout their temporary stay in the Kingdom, while safeguarding the security and interests of the Kingdom and its people.

The acting government spokesperson said the Administration will continue to provide updates on any significant developments concerning TCNs in the Kingdom, as appropriate.

SWADNU calls for reinstatement of health workers

By Nokuphila Haji, eSwatini Observer (press reader edition), 2 October 2026

SOURCE

The Swaziland Democratic Nurses Union (SWADNU) has called for the immediate reinstatement of health workers whose contracts ended on September 30.

The union is calling on government, members of Parliament, Cabinet ministers and ministry of health to ensure that the affected workers were brought back into the health system.

The workers, who were funded through health grants, include HIV testing and counselling (HTS) counsellors, phlebotomists, data clerks and expert clients, according to SWADNU.

In a statement, the union said the workers had played an important role alongside nurses in providing HIV-related services, including prevention of mother-to-child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) and work linked to the 95-95-95 HIV targets.

SWADNU said the termination of the contracts would increase the workload of nurses, who it described as already short-staffed and overstretched.

“Devastatingly, the discontinued contracts for the workers visibly implies that the workload would now pile up for the already acutely short-staffed, overstretched and battling with burnout nurses,” the union said.

It warned that the loss of the workers could undermine progress made in the country’s fight against HIV/AIDS.

“The gains that we have achieved as a country on HIV/AIDS matters would now be reversed, with jet-like speed the nation would be plunging again in the pool of the already soaring high HIV figures again,” the statement reads.

SWADNU said it was prepared to take to the streets if the affected workers were not reinstated within a fortnight. The dispute follows letters issued by the ministry of health informing some grant-funded employees that their contracts would end on September 30.

In a letter dated September 4, 2026, the ministry informed affected employees that their contracts, funded by the

United States Government through the National Emergency Response Council on HIV and AIDS (NERCHA), would expire at the end of September.

The ministry said the affected employees would receive payment for outstanding annual leave days and any terminal benefits due under their contracts and the Employment Act, 1980.

E558M to fund eSwatini’s health security defence plan

By Sifiso Nhlabatsi, eSwatini Positive News, 7 October 2026

SOURCE

EZULWINI: Government will require an estimated E558 million to implement Eswatini’s National Action Plan for Health Security (NAPHS) over the next five years, as the country moves to establish a fully integrated, multi-sectoral defence system against public health emergencies.

The NAPHS, officially launched by Minister of Health Mduduzi Matsebula at Royal Villas on Wednesday, sets out interventions to be implemented from 2026 to 2030 under a comprehensive One Health Framework, bringing together human health, animal health, agriculture, environmental management and disaster risk management.

Matsebula described the plan as more than a policy document, saying it was intended to serve as a “shield to protect our citizens” and an operational blueprint for safeguarding the country against public health risks.

“Today, our country is building a fully integrated, multi-sectoral defence system under a comprehensive One Health Framework, that requires an estimated budget of E558 million to implement interventions over a period of 2026 to 2030,” said Matsebula.

The minister said the investment was necessary to ensure that Eswatini could detect, prevent and contain health emergencies before they escalate, particularly as the country remains connected to regional and international movement of people and goods.

He said Eswatini could no longer afford to wait for health emergencies before strengthening its preparedness systems.

According to Matsebula, the country’s health security priorities include strengthening early warning and surveillance systems, expanding local laboratory capacity and institutionalising multi-sectoral mobilisation during emergencies.

He said early warning systems needed to be strengthened through responsive community-level networks capable of detecting pathogens before they reached national borders.

The minister also identified the decentralisation of diagnostic systems as a priority, saying this would allow dangerous biological threats to be confirmed and managed locally without unnecessary delays.

The third priority is improved coordination between human health, animal welfare, agriculture and environmental sectors to ensure rapid responses when emergencies occur.

King Mswati’s R35million alleged bribe’ for advocating for Taiwan to be recognized by the United Nations as an independent State

By Zweli Martin Dlamini, Swaziland News, 2 October 2026

SOURCE

MBABANE: King Mswati is highly expected to receive $2million (about R35million in current exchange rate) from Taiwan after advocating for the Chinese Province to be recognized by the United Nations (UN) as an independent State.

This comes after the King, in violation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2758 of 1971 that recognized and endorsed the “One China Policy”, addressed the UN General Assembly in New York, the United States last and called for the UN recognition of Taiwan, a Chinese Province.

Documents in possession of this Swaziland News and sourced through the Taiwan Embassy and Eswatini Government communications systems suggest that, the money is normally processed and disguised as a donation for the King’s Palaces security upgrades when in fact, Palaces renovation are funded by Government and included in the National Budget.

But King Mswati’s Spokesperson Percy Simelane when responding to this publication earlier on the subject matter, denied that the money was a bribe.

The King’s Spokesperson first asked this journalist to send the documents so that he could share an informed comment, he then denied these the money was a bribe processed as a token of appreciation by Taiwan for the King’s consistent advocacy for Taiwan to be recognized as an independent State.

“The letters in question conform to Government House Style for requesting for financial assistance from its development partners and we have no reasons to believe they were agents of ulterior motives,” said the King’s Spokesperson.

Simelane did not clarify why the King now receives money from Taiwan for security upgrades when Parliament approved and released a multibillion royal budget and why the money “is processed every after the King” addressed the UN General Assembly and advocate for the recognition of Taiwan.

But an insider who shared a highly confidential document, confirming the chain of communication between Mswati’s Government and the Taiwanese Embassy when facilitating the alleged bribe, told this publication that the King normally demand his payment shortly after returning from the UN General Assembly.

“As you can see in the documents, the facilitation of the payment was rushed because the King said he wanted his money urgently after delivering the speech. Previously the payment was US$1,000,000,00(about R18million), it was then increased to US$2,000.000.00”, said the royal insider.

Reached for comments on Saturday afternoon, Mlungisi Makhanya, the President of the People’s United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO), accused the King of manipulating the Sovereignty of the country to engage in what he described as dollar diplomacy while depriving emaSwati of opportunities that comes with the establishment of diplomatic relations with China.

“We have an urgent duty as emaSwati to take back our Sovereignty autonomy and independence from Mswati who is abusing it to prostitute our Sovereignty for monetary benefits like it is the case here where the interest of the Nation is not prioritized but his interests are there ones that are considered. We have said Tinkhundla has been conducting what we call “dollar diplomacy” where diplomatic relations are established and maintained on the basis of payments to the establishment”, said the PUDEMO President.

The PUDEMO President said even if the money was disguised as a grant for development, the question would be; is it subject to accountability by Parliament and the Office of the Auditor General (AG)?

Makhanya said monies received from development partners on behalf of the country must be declared and be accounted for, he noted that, the R40million “is normally paid straight to Mswati” without being declared or accounted for.

On another note, King Mswati is highly expected to travel to Taiwan next week after welcoming Ching-Lin Tsuei, the new Taiwan Ambassador to the Kingdom of Eswatini.

EmaSwati the most disrespected Nation by their leadership

Opinion by Wandile Dludlu, Swaziland News, 25 September 2026

SOURCE

The conduct of firstly the royal family, His Majesty’s Government, and most local and national leadership presidium depicts a common denominator: absolute low regard, care and contemptuous demeanor through covert and overt measures in the day-to-day operations of the Swazi State.

The King and his Government, as we speak, attended the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In this session, like a majority of sessions for the last forty (40) years His Majesty has likely attended, there were robust, frank and open discussions and debates, some of which were contentious, emotive and controversial.

The UN platform allows one leader to speak without any form of restriction nor unreasonable limitation.

Donald Trump spoke openly against the Islamic Republic of Iran, even threatened to “annihilate” them should they not concede to US demands but the President of Iran came with a heavy rebuttal against the US and Israel.

The Eswatini delegation was interestingly part of those who walked out when the Israeli leader took to the podium as a protest for their massacre of the children of Gaza. That’s politics, Your Majesty, once we are tempted to say wow, but remember quickly that in your backyard that walk out could mean death, a lengthy prison term, if not exile.

Why does the King, after exposure to the reality of the world – in how human beings, no matter their race, geography or level of development as nations, differ in how they view and conceive the very world they live in, and worse how they see the future in those countries for their kids – it is very strange that Your Majesty, you deny Emaswati that natural right to freely exercise their natural rights.

We have a government we can’t fire in any form in case we are unhappy. Politicians across the world can be fired for poor performance, for corruption, like the collapsed public healthcare, and for a variety of reasons.

Politics has no entitlements nor permanent arrangements. Even the most loved or revered politicians have been subjected to public scrutiny with consequences should they fall short. Except here in Eswatini, Your Majesty.

Just look how cabinet ministers and MPs openly talk about how now it is time to campaign for the next elections, after yet another dismal performance in which no meaningful jobs were created, no rural development upscaled, whilst poverty levels deepened.

But so long as the royal family is happy with them, they are guaranteed of another seat either as cabinet ministers or members of Parliament.

Until Emaswati bolster our position as citizens not subjects, claim our virtues and innate being, Jesus Christ will not come back to babysit Emaswati.

Call for retired jurists to probe eSwatini’s anti-corruption institutions failure

By Sifiso Nhlabatsi, eSwatini Positive News, 30 September 2026

SOURCE

LOBAMBA: Members of Parliament are being asked to consider a different approach to Eswatini’s long-running corruption problem by establishing a Judiciary Commission of Enquiry, preferably comprising impartial retired jurists from within or outside the country, to investigate why institutions mandated to fight corruption have struggled to stop the scourge.

The proposal is contained in Private Members’ Motion 31/2026, by Hhukwini Member of Parliament Alec Lushaba and seconded by Appointed Member of Parliament Prince Mshengu.

Lushaba wants the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs to establish the commission within 14 days of Parliament adopting the motion.

The proposed commission would investigate the causes and reasons behind the failure of institutions tasked with fighting corruption across all branches of Government.

It would also be empowered to refer matters to appropriate prosecutorial, investigative or disciplinary authorities where its investigations establish that a person, public officer, commissioner, employee, judicial officer or other office bearer had engaged in corruption.

The commission would have four months to complete its work and submit its findings to the Minister, who would then table the report before Parliament.

The proposal comes against a backdrop of recurring allegations and investigations involving public procurement, government expenditure and public institutions.

Among recent cases, the Auditor General flagged more than E3.3 billion in financial irregularities in the International Convention Centre and Five-Star Hotel project, including alleged tender breaches, unsupported expenditure and weaknesses in contract management and oversight.

In another case, a senior Ministry of Agriculture official was arrested in 2025 and charged with 106 counts of corruption, fraud, theft and money laundering, following an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The allegations involved at least E133 900.

Procurement has also remained a recurring area of concern, with medical suppliers lodging 19 objections with the Eswatini Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (ESPPRA) over government tenders worth about E1 billion.

The motion is yet to be adopted by the House.

‘Raise the bar on teachers’ demands’

By Kwanele Sibiya, eSwatini Observer, 29 September 2026

SOURCE

Outgoing Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) President Mbongwa Dlamini has challenged the union’s incoming leadership to raise the bar on teachers’ demands by moving beyond cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) towards a living wage and stronger employment conditions.

Dlamini made the call during the 2026 SNAT Annual Conference held at Esibayeni Lodge in Matsapha, where teachers gathered to elect a new National Executive Committee (NEC) and deliberate on issues affecting the union.

The conference was themed ‘Empowering Union Members to Deepen, Defend and Advance Workers’ Collective Bargaining.’

In his address, Dlamini reflected on what he described as eight years of “trial and triumph” at the helm of the teachers’ union.

“You entrusted me with this banner for eight years, from 2018 to 2022 and again from 2022 to (yesterday). It was not a normal journey,” he said.

He recalled being suspended in May 2019, saying this came after he stood up for teachers’ interests.

According to Dlamini, he was reinstated in October 2021 but was subsequently transferred from Mhubhe High School to Moyeni High School.

He further said his salary was stopped in September 2022 before he was dismissed in August 2023 for alleged absenteeism.

Dlamini, however, maintained that his absence from the classroom was linked to his involvement in negotiations on behalf of teachers.

“In August 2023, I was dismissed for ‘absenteeism’ while I was sitting at the negotiation table fighting for your salaries,” he said.

He claimed that he had won every court case relating to his disputes with Government but alleged that the orders had not been honoured.

Despite the challenges, Dlamini said he was leaving office without bitterness.

“I stand before you today not bitter but proud because you empowered me and together we turned trials into triumphs. We put money in teachers’ homes,” he said.

Dlamini also highlighted what he described as some of the union’s major achievements during his tenure, including salary improvements.

He said SNAT secured COLA adjustments in 2022, 2023 and 2024, followed by a salary review in 2025.

“For years government said there is no money. We forced them to the table and we delivered real improvement in the economic life of every teacher,” he said.

Dlamini also pointed to the construction of the E39 million SNAT Conference Centre, saying the project represented the union’s determination to build its own institutional infrastructure despite the challenges it faced.

“It will be our own home and this is proof that even under persecution, an empowered union can build,” he said.

On pensions, Dlamini urged the incoming leadership to remain vigilant in defending the Public Service Pension Fund (PSPF), warning that the issue remained unresolved.

He said SNAT had fought what he described as attempts to alter the pension system through the courts, streets and bargaining structures.

Society urged to promote inclusion of persons with disabilities

By Sibusisekile Ndlangamandla, eSwatini Positive News, 1 October 2026

MANZINI: Greater inclusion of persons with disabilities and acceptance of diversity are essential to achieving prosperity, as literacy should ensure that everyone has access to information, opportunities and meaningful participation in society, Eswatini National Commission for UNESCO Secretary-General Lwandle Simelane has said.

Simelane said society should ensure that persons with disabilities have opportunities to learn, access information and participate meaningfully in communities and the economy. Speaking during literacy day held under the theme “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity,” where she highlighted the broader role of literacy in creating inclusive societies.

She said literacy should not be reduced to the ability to read and write, as it also involves understanding information, communicating effectively, thinking critically and participating meaningfully in society.

She said this broader understanding of literacy was important because people need different skills to navigate their daily lives and respond to changes in society. “Literacy is so much more than that,” Simelane said.

Persons with disabilities should be embraced as part of efforts to achieve prosperity, noting that diversity should be recognised as a valuable part of society rather than a reason for exclusion.

Inclusive communities give people the opportunity to use their abilities, share ideas and contribute to development. This requires society to consider the different needs of people when providing access to information, education and other opportunities. She also highlighted digital literacy as an important skill that enables people to participate safely and meaningfully in an increasingly digital world.

Financial literacy, she said, helps people understand money, make informed financial decisions and plan for the future, while media literacy enables people to distinguish information from misinformation and fact from opinion. Numeracy also remains important because it allows people to understand and use numbers in everyday situations.

Tough times as fuel prices edge close to E30 per litre

By Nhlanganiso Mkhonta, Times of eSwatini, 1 October 2026

SOURCE

MBABANE: Motorists across Eswatini will pay E29.40 per litre for petrol from midnight after government announced a E3.43 increase.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy announced yesterday that Unleaded Petrol 95 would rise from E25.97 to E29.40 per litre, while Diesel 0.005 per cent S would increase from E28.85 to E32.25 per litre. Illuminating paraffin will also increase from E21.73 to E25.16 per litre. The new prices will take effect at midnight on Thursday, October 1, 2026, and will therefore apply from tomorrow.

The latest increase comes amid significant disruption in international oil markets, with government citing geopolitical tensions, restrictions on shipping routes and damage to refining infrastructure as key drivers of higher global fuel costs. Crude oil prices averaged US$102 per barrel in September, compared with US$89 in August. The ministry said persistent geopolitical tensions had resulted in restrictions on shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, while Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries had added to global fuel-supply challenges.

These developments have also increased security and insurance costs associated with transporting petroleum products.

The Lilangeni also weakened slightly against the United States Dollar during the period under review, averaging E16.18 to the Dollar in September compared with E16.14 in August. The exchange-rate movement added further pressure to the cost of importing fuel into the country.
