eSwatini pro-democracy MPs sentenced for murder, ‘terrorism’

By AFP (Agence France Presse), 15 July 2024

SOURCE

A court in Eswatini sentenced two pro-democracy lawmakers to 25 and 18 years in jail on Monday for “terrorism” and murder related to 2021 protests in Africa's last absolute monarchy.

The former members of parliament had pleaded innocent to all counts ahead of their conviction last year, almost two years after they were arrested on accusations of having incited unrest.

A judge at the High Court in the capital Mbabane sentenced Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza to 25 years and Mthandeni Dube to 18 years in jail.

“I have considered the fact that you were remorseful throughout the trial and that is the reason I will give you a lesser sentence,” she said.

Mabuza and Dube were arrested in July 2021 during pro-democracy protests that were violently quashed by security forces, leaving dozens dead.

They had advocated for reforms to a complex system of non-party elections that effectively ensures King Mswati III faces no meaningful dissent.

According to a Human Rights Watch report in 2023, the murder conviction relates to the deaths of two men hit by a car on June 29, 2021, at a roadblock during the protests.

A lawyer for the pair said they were not present.

Mswati, who has ruled since 1986, wields absolute power in the small kingdom of around 1.2 million people, most of whom live in poverty.

The 56-year-old can veto any legislation, appoints the prime minister and cabinet, and is constitutionally above the law.

The South African-based pro-democracy Swaziland Solidarity Network said the sentences against Mabuza and Dube were “ridiculous” and praised the men as “freedom fighters”.

The Swaziland Liberation Movement said it was appalled by the sentences which appeared to “silence” members of parliament.

Authorities must quash convictions and sentences of former MPs

Amnesty International, 16 July 2024

SOURCE

Following the sentencing of former Eswatini Members of Parliament Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza to 85 years and Mthandeni Dube to 58 years in prison, with effective sentence terms of 25 years and 18 years respectively due to concurrent sentences, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, Vongai Chikwanda, said:

“Eswatini authorities must immediately quash the unjust and baseless convictions and sentences of the former members of parliament. Their convictions and sentences stem solely from the peaceful exercise of their human rights.

“Authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube and end this travesty of justice and blatant attempt to suppress peaceful dissent.

“Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube have been arbitrarily detained since their arrest during pro-democracy protests in 2021. They have been subjected to a prolonged legal process characterized by baseless charges under the Suppression of Terrorism Act and Sedition and Subversive Activities Act. The former members of parliament were prosecuted for calling for political reform in Eswatini.

The heavy sentence on our MPs will not derail our quest for freedom

Media Statement, SWALIMO, Swati Newsweek, 16 July 2024,

SOURCE

The Swaziland Liberation Movement (SWALIMO) is appalled by the heavy sentencing on the former Members of Parliament, Hon. Bacede and Mthandeni to a collective 68 years.

The constitutional provision of freedom of speech and consciousness has been violated by the courts of this country through this sentencing. It is further clear that the independence of Parliament has been compromised leaving the nation with nothing else but to conclude that the sentencing is meant to silence Members of Parliament.

This is further proof that there is no rule of law in Eswatini. SWALIMO has been constrained to the hope that sanity will prevail as an organization that regards the rule of law to be supreme, however, this sentencing has confirmed that the Tinkhundla system is always ready to go against the law of the land.

SWALIMO calls on all Emaswati in all their diverse associations to unite and do the neccessary in solidarity with the former MPs. Injustice to them is injustice to all of us and as a nation we must apply all means available to show our indictnation.

Swaziland will be free eventually and we all need to wait with breasted hopes for the day of freedom where all our tears will wiped away.

Issued by: Thantaza N Silolo

SWALIMO Spokesperson.

Ministry of Health drugs shortage alleged thief businesswoman Zinhle Matsebula in Central Bank multibillion Financial Intelligence leaked suspicious transactions

By Zweli Martin Dlamini, Swaziland News, 16 July, 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: Zinhle Matsebula, the businesswoman whose name features prominently in the Ministry of Health multibillion drugs shortage scandal, was allegedly investigated by the Central Bank of Eswatini (CBE) Financial Intelligence Unit for alleged suspicious transactions.

This is contained in the leaked documents from the Eswatini Financial Intelligence Unit (EFIU), the documents in possession of this Swaziland News were leaked to a team of international journalists including this publication.

A report from the Financial Intelligence Unit suggests that Matsebula, who was working for the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital, was banking with the First National Bank(FNB) since March 2010.

But the bank is alleged to have forwarded a report to the Central Bank for possible investigation after detecting suspicious transactions from different accounts.

“Zinhle Matsebula is employed by the RFM hospital as a nurse. The client has been banking with FNB since March 2010 and she has another account linked to her in the name of Zimpa Investement pty ltd. Client's transactional behaviour in the personal account is suspicious in that often receives cash deposits and electronic payments from different accounts which we do not know the purpose of the transactions. The transactional activity suggests that she is running a small business and managing its finances using the personal account. She also makes regular payments to an account referenced Total Life”, reads the report in part.

The report further suggests that, Matsebula, while working for the RFM Hospital was suspected of secret dealings but she was disguising with a small business she operated through her personal bank account.

The businesswoman was later implicated in the drugs shortage scandal after she allegedly colluded with SwaziPharm Director Kareem Ashraff to establish Lifespan Pharmaceuticals and other companies that were allegedly used to loot millions of public funds resulting to shortage of drugs in public hospitals.

Businesswoman Zinhle Matsebula denied any involvement in the widely reported drugs shortage scandal.

On another note, the thousands of leaked documents in possession of this Swaziland News and other international journalists include reports from the Eswatini Financial Intelligence Unit(EFIU) and suspicious transactions for politicians, businesspeople, private and public companies including ordinary citizens who are suspected of money laundering.

We’re ready with alternative remedies for patients - tinyanga

By Bongumusa Simelane, eSwatini Observer, 18 July 2024

SOURCE

In the face of the drug shortage in public health facilities in the country, traditional healers have raised their hands and want to come in and help the nation with natural herbs in a bid to salvage the situation.

This comes after an ongoing public outcry over the country’s worsening health crisis, which has seen many Emaswati having to fork out their hard earned money to purchase different types of medication in private pharmacies due to the lack or non-availability of medication in public hospitals and clinics.

Following that, some traditional healers have come out to claim that they can assist Emaswati by treating some of their illnesses using traditional herbs or medicine.

One of the traditional healers, who has vouched for African medicine, was Dr Malayini Matsebula, who said as traditional healers they have a lot to offer in the face of the drug crisis in the country.

Matsebula said traditional healers do have medication that can help in the treating of most of the ailments that the public usually suffers from. He stated that some of the medication that is offered in health facilities is derived from plants or herbs that they also use to treat illnesses.

“The problem is that some people lack knowledge on such things and this is attributed to by religious beliefs and other factors. As traditional healers we heal people from a lot of sicknesses which are also treated in hospitals, but people tend to look down upon tradition healers due to lack of knowledge about what they can actually do,” he said.

Matsebula said sometimes some pastors would preach against the use of herbs yet some of them come to them secretly to seek for assistance. He stated that such behaviour should be done away with because it puts the lives of Emaswati at risk. He said Emaswati needed knowledge about the use of traditional medicine and to differentiate between witchcraft and traditional healing.

In addition, he said despite that, some people do come to seek for help from traditional healers and they get treated of their illnesses. He said it was not a good thing that as traditional healers they would be reduced to just being gate keepers when it comes to the use of traditional medicine.

He added that despite that, some people do come to consult with them whenever they are sick and they get treated effectively. He said traditional healing was just a calling just like being a doctor in a hospital. Matsebula stated that as traditional healers they wish to see western doctors cooperating with them in this field of medicine.

Schools food crisis: Some pupils steal lunch boxes

By Sithembile Hlatshwayo, edited from Times of eSwatini print edition, 18 July 2024

MBABANE: The food crisis in schools has reached alarming levels, where some learners have resorted to stealing from their peers and bullies forcefully grabbing lunch boxes.

So serious is the situation such that some schools have resorted to seeking monetary contributions and mealie-meal in an effort to mitigate the situation. Early this year, Edlozini Primary School pupils were asked to contribute mealie-meal to the school feeding scheme. Also Mnyokane Primary School asked pupils to provide sugar from home. This was after the school was only left with maize-meal.

Currently, there are 600 primary schools in the country.

In a most recent case, Mater Dolorosa (MDS) Primary School reached out to parents to make contributions to buy food, as the government supply ration has significantly declined.

This was during an urgent food crisis meeting, which was held at the school yesterday.

The parents were called to the urgent meeting and turned out in numbers, such that the hall was full to its capacity and some people had to listen from outside.

Following a number of suggestions which were made by the parents, the school chose to go with the money contributions, as more parents voted for that idea. Other suggestions included a vegetable garden and poultry farming.

The Head teacher of the school, Thabo Nkambule, said the food supply which they received from government had significantly declined.

Doctors, Govt meeting ends in stalemate

By Nokuphila Haji, eSwatini Observer, 2 July 2024

SOURCE

Despite that government has asked doctors to allow them at least two more days to process on-call allowances, they have vowed not to work beyond their normal working hours.

The ministry of health and the doctors yesterday had a meeting to discuss the issue of the payment of on-call allowances, which took over six hours.

Doctors had previously undertaken to abandon overtime and on-call duty with effect from yesterday, promising to only work their normal hours.

Their issue is that government had reportedly failed to pay them their allowances.

During the meeting, this newspaper understands that government pleaded with the doctors to allow them until tomorrow to process their payments.

Government is said to have further asked the doctors to resume on-call duty while their allowances were processed.

“There is a stalemate. Doctors flatly refused the offer on the table, saying they want their money first before resuming on-calls,” a source told this newspaper. The ministry met with the on-call doctors committee which represented the over 300 doctors owed overtime allowances for the period between October 2023 to March.

The allowances were supposed to be included in their June salaries.

The public health facilities that were anticipated to suffer from the stand-off included Mbabane Government Hospital, Hlatikhulu Government Hospital, Mankayane Government Hospital, Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital, Mkhuzweni health centre, Dvokolwako health centre and Matsanjeni health centre.

Chief Gija: arrest those who charge for imiphakatsi stamps

By Mthunzi Mdluli, Times of eSwatini, 2 July 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE:  Following the public outcry on charging residents for imiphakatsi stamps, Chief Gija has called for the arrest of anyone who charged for the service.

The Manzini Regional Administrator (RA), Chief Gija, is also calling for the arrest of anyone who charges members of the public for other services, such as confirmation letters issued by the royal kraals. Recently, Ekutsimuleni residents, under the Mkhiweni Inkhundla, complained that they were not receiving government services brought by the Ministry of Home Affairs, last Thursday, because they did not have E100 to pay for the royal kraal stamp. This is not the first-time residents complained about being made to pay for royal kraal stamps.

It has been gathered that about 50 residents of Ekutsimuleni were affected on that day. Information gathered was to the effect that the E100 was paid towards the stamp, cartridge and paper. The royal kraal collected a sum of E5 000 from typing letters, alleged some of the residents. This means that those who do not have the E100, especially orphaned and vulnerable children (OVCs) and the elderly, will not get the necessary assistance. The less privileged have been hindered from getting government services since they are expected to pay the stamp fee. Masotja Magagula, who is a member of Ekutsimuleni Inner Council, confirmed that the royal kraal was charging residents for the royal kraal stamp and letters confirming that they belonged to the community.

eSwatini’s young leaders embrace Commonwealth Charter values

The Commonwealth, 1 July 2024

SOURCE

Young people who play leading roles throughout society in Eswatini, have been learning how values enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter can empower them to become ambassadors for democracy, peace, and sustainable development in their communities.

They came from diverse backgrounds, representing civil society, religious organisations, NGOs, youth advocacy groups and the business sector, to attend the two-day Commonwealth Charter workshop. Participants say they will pass on the knowledge and skills they have gained to their colleagues and peers.

Sakhile Nsibandze, who works with the Youth Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said:

“The interesting part about this workshop, for me, is how the youth are starting to understand the local system of governance, and how they can integrate it with the Commonwealth Charter, and how it would be helpful for them in their day-to-day lives.”

Lindokuhle Mahlalela, a young attendee, said: “I’ve been very impressed with how the workshop has been facilitated. The Commonwealth came with a different approach to dealing with our problems, as we know them intimately. The sort of questions they’ve been asking us are ‘how can you affect change?’ so it’s more about how they can guide us in using home-grown solutions to address not just one problem, but across the board.”

2023/2024 has been designated a ‘Year of the Youth‘ across the Commonwealth.

Near chaos as Bacede mobilises inmates to riot

By Kwanele Dlamini and Stanley Khumalo, Times of eSwatini, 1 July 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: Chaos almost erupted at the Matsapha Maximum Prison when former MP Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza reportedly mobilised inmates to riot.

The former Hosea Member of Parliament (MP) is alleged to have accused Correctional officers of feeding inmates unpleasant food and started chanting political slogans.
Other inmates, according to the source, responded in like manner.  Mabuza also reportedly tried to attack a senior Correctional officer. It is said the situation was so tense such that the prison authorities had to call for reinforcement from recruits at the Correctional Services College, to quell the situation, which was seemingly getting out of hand.  Meanwhile, the inmates are said to have been ordered to go back to their cells with immediate effect.

The source said some inmates obeyed the order while others remained behind. However, according to the source, the inmates who had remained behind followed the others into the cells after realising that they might be in trouble. In the period of two years and 11 months that he has spent in custody, Mabuza has allegedly breached Correctional laws more than 10 times.

There are, however, different versions on why Mabuza lost his cool on the fateful day. Another version was to the effect that on June 16, 2024, Mabuza wanted to use the telephone but was reportedly denied that privilege and he banged the receiver against the wall.

June 29, 2021 victims, survivors commemorate peacefully

By Joseph Zulu, Times Sunday, 30 June 2024

SOURCE

MANZINI: It was an emotion-filled day   as members of the democratic change movement commemorated the survivors and those who lost their lives during the civil unrest on June 29, 2021, peacefully yesterday.

This was despite the heavy security that was present over the past week on all major roads around the country, which culminated in drama unfolding at Siphofaneni on Friday morning, where members of the security forces raided homes of Siphofaneni Member of Parliament (MP) Nomalungelo LaZwide Simelane and former Senate Deputy President Ngomuyayona Gamedze, in the wee hours of morning. The event was organised by the Swaziland Massacre Victims and Survivors Association (SWAVISA). The event was held at Caritas, Manzini yesterday.

The heavy security presence continued yesterday, as members of the security forces engaged on random patrols around the country, a security surveillance helicopter was also spotted hovering over the venue where the commemoration was held. It is worth noting that despite the heavy security presence, things continued as usual in the busy city of Manzini, as people went about their business despite the anticipation and uncertainty that engulfed a majority of the public, as they anticipated yet another violent encounter between members of the public and security forces.

At the event, different political activists, including members of the People’s United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO), Swaziland Liberation Movement (SWALIMO), Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS), joined in to commemorate the day, as well as pay their respects to those who lost their lives. The event which began vibrantly as the attendees sang political songs and danced, ended on a sad, teary and emotional note as all those present observed a moment of silence and lit candles in memory of those who lost their lives during the unrest.

The relatives and friends of all those who passed away during the unrest also wrote their names on a canvas in honour of their lives.  The survivors and the family members of those who could not be present during the event shared their testimony on the difficulties they have faced as a result of the various injuries they sustained during the unrest. Some of the victims mentioned that before the unrest, they lived better lives and had jobs, but that was no longer the cased as they could no longer provide for themselves and their families. A majority of the survivors put the blame on government for failing them, while others advocated for the truth to be told on what happened during the unrest.

Cops, warders, soldiers raid LaZwide, Ngoma’s homes

By Sabelo Ndzinisa, eSwatini News, 29 June 2024

SOURCE

SIPHOFANENI: Drama unfolded yesterday morning when the country’s law enforcers raided homes of Siphofaneni Member of Parliament (MP) Nomalungelo LaZwide Simelane and former Senate Deputy President Ngomuyayona Gamedze, under unclear reasons.

The raids, according to information gathered by the Eswatini News, happened in the early hours of yesterday morning, where armed police officers accompanied by soldiers and warders are said to have invaded the homes of the two mentioned politicians unannounced and without any search warrants.

They are alleged to have not only failed to produce search warrants when asked to do so, but are accused of  allegedly forcefully snatching away MP  LaZwide’s cellphone from her hand when she tried to record the incident.  According to the MP, the officers were not happy that the Siphofaneni legislator was taking pictures, as they were conducting the search and are said to have deleted the pictures after forcefully taking the cellphone from her. It has further been established that over 20 officers were part of the raids, while a helicopter was also spotted patrolling the Siphofaneni area during that period.

The invasion by the officers at the MP’s homestead is said to have caused terror among the children that were allegedly rudely forced to wake up from their beds, as early as 4am.

Upon seeing the officers armed with guns, some of the children are said to have taken to their heels before finding refuge in another house inside the compound, in fear of the unknown.

Interesting to note, is that soon after the raid, which is said to have lasted for over an hour, a heavy road-block was mounted along the route leading to the MP’s homestead, where cars passing by were searched. Noteworthy, is that officers from the three security forces conducted the roadblock. However, Acting Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Nosipho Mnguni made it clear that the raids in Siphofaneni were not targeted at the two mentioned politicians.“People should not be misled to believe that the raids were only conducted on the two (LaZwide and Ngomuyayona) because other homesteads were searched as well.“There is nothing sinister about the raids because we never announce them to the public anyway,” Mnguni stated briefly. The police communications officers could not comment on the concerns that the raids were conducted without search warrants, which is contrary to what was required by law.

The Station Commander at the Siphofaneni Police Station was also asked to comment on the raids, but he referred such inquiries to Mnguni. Some of the residents at KaMkhweli, where LaZwide resides, registered their disappointment at the raid, pointing out that it was deliberately staged to instil fear. “The children were made to go through the trauma of seeing soldiers carrying guns inside their home. “It is also disappointing to note that the officers could not produce search warrants when asked to do so, yet they continued to turn things upside down in the houses they entered. “I feel pity for the family,” one resident, who asked to remain anonymous said.

Why did Tinkhundla cruel regime shutdown internet and ordered Times and Observer not to print and be in circulation on the June 29 massacre?

Opinion by Zweli Martin Dlamini, Swaziland News, 30 June, 2024

SOURCE

On the day of the June 29 [2021] massacre, the internet was switched-off, the Times and Eswatini Observer were ordered not to print newspapers as the army, the police and foreign mercenaries were busy killing innocent civilians.

We haven’t seen the journalists or editors filing complaints with international human rights organizations or explaining why the two (2) daily newspapers were ordered not to publish.

I remember receiving a call from a senior Manager of the MTN Group informing me that, as the mobile company, they wanted to release a press statement and clarify that, it was the Government through the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) that ordered the internet shutdown.

This was after Themba Masuku, the then Acting Prime Minister and outright liar who is currently languishing in the political dustbin, lied that the internet shutdown was caused by the damage of national infrastructure including the mobile company’s network infrastructure.

Indeed MTN Group, through its South African Office sent the press statement to this Swaziland News clarifying the matter, that’s what a reputable company does to protect its brand or reputation.

But, there was no clarification from the Times and Observer why the newspapers did not print or were not in circulation on the day of the massacre and the Times has been trying to convince the people to take it seriously and regard it as an independent publication.

This should be an eye opener that, the Tinkhundla cruel and undemocratic regime has enablers even within the media and it’s very unfortunate, journalism is not about being in the good books of a dictatorship regime.

I am not in the good books of the Tinkhundla cruel regime that kills innocent and I don’t need a political romance from this regime, in fact I want to see it overthrown as a matter of urgency.

Journalists who are expected to be the voice of the people were told to shut-up while soldiers, the police and Defense Principal Secretary Prince Sicalo’s alleged foreign mercenaries were killing innocent civilians like chickens in a butchery and with impunity.

I am particularly concerned with the conduct of the journalists and eager to know; what level of capture that allows a journalist to keep quiet while innocent civilians are being killed?.

Well, I remember when I started exposing SwaziPharm Director Kareem Ashraff regarding the health crisis.

One former Cabinet Minister who is a member of the royal family told me that; “Ashraff might bribe you to keep quiet” and I said “keeping quiet while patients die in public hospitals would mean I must just resign and leave journalism”.

Indeed and in my opinion, a journalist must be driven by a desire to be the voice of those powerless citizens who can’t speak for themselves and hold those in power accountable.

Clearly, we need an independent probe to ascertain why the Times and Observer were not in circulation on the day of the massacre, these newspapers were complicit in the killing of civilians and they owe the public an explanation.

890 000 leaked state documents: soldier, man demand E230k bribe from Archbishop Lukhele, arrested

By Sibusiso Shange, Times of eSwatini, 15 May 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: Police have arrested two men for reportedly attempting to extort a sum of E230 000 from Archbishop Bheki Lukhele of All Nations Church in Zion.

This is the first spin-off from the widely publicised Swazi Secrets, an investigative project coordinated by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). It was said the project is based on 890 000 leaked documents from Eswatini’s Financial Intelligence Unit (EFIU), which ICIJ says it shared with a team of 38 journalists across 11 countries. The reports documented Archbishop Lukhele as having allegedly played a role in the transfer of certain monies from the African National Congress’s election account.

There is no record of Archbishop Lukhele responding to the allegations. Police are said to be investigating allegations that the two emaSwati men took advantage of the allegations made in the reports to solicit a bribe from the church leader. One of the two men, who posed as officers from the Eswatini Financial Intelligence Unit (EFIU), was arrested yesterday.
In the attempt to extort Lukhele, they are said to have informed him that they could assist to protect him from being arrested, as he was aware of the information contained in the recently published leaked documents. It has been gathered that one of the suspects is a soldier.  The duo aged 38 and 34 allegedly misrepresented to Lukhele that they were investigating the matter and that he would be arrested unless he paid the bribe.

However, sources said Lukhele, who insisted on his innocence, hastened to report the matter to the police, whose investigations led to the arrest of the duo. The duo was subsequently arrested and is currently assisting the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) with information. They were due to appear in court yesterday afternoon, however, they were produced and taken back to the police station, without appearing before any judicial officer, after spending about an hour in a police van, at the Mbabane Magistrates Court.

eSwatini, burdened doubly with HIV and cervical cancer, targets safety for the next generation

By Nonduduzo Kunene, Vaccines Work, 13 May 2024

SOURCE

Eswatini suffers a double burden, with uncommonly high rates of both HIV and cervical cancer.

The country’s HIV prevalence of 25.9% among adults is one of the highest in the world. Its age-standardised cervical cancer incidence –  84.5 per 100,000 – is the world’s highest, bar none.

Those two disease rates are not independent of each other. Women living with HIV and the cancer-causing human papillomavirus (HPV) are more likely to contract cervical cancer than their HIV-negative counterparts with HPV. A 2017 research paper from Eswatini found that women with HIV had a much higher rate of cervical lesions (22.9%) than HIV-negative women (5.7%).

Encouragingly, another study, also from Eswatini, and published just last month in the journal PLOS Global Public Health, points to the impact a robust public health response can have. Not only did the new research show lower-than-expected cervical cancer positivity rates overall – about 2.6% across both of the regions under study – it also showed that women living with HIV who had been on anti-retroviral therapy for longer periods of time were less likely to screen positive for cervical cancer than women whose HIV had been medically managed for less than five years. Women whose HIV load had been suppressed by treatment to undetectable levels, were also less likely to screen positive for the cancer than women with unsuppressed HIV burdens.

If those findings are encouraging, so are health policy initiatives being enacted on the ground. On 25 March 2024, Eswatini’s Ministry of Health mobilised a US$ 1.6 million grant for the introduction of HPV through Gavi’s Middle-Income Countries approach.  This is part of a focused move to drastically reduce cervical cancer by 2030.

King Mswati’s Government maintains silence as Taiwan nationals invade rural areas, forcefully seize land belonging to poor and powerless citizens while demolishing houses

By Bongiwe Dlamini, Swaziland News, 13 May 2024

GEGE: King Mswati’s Government has maintained silence as Taiwan nationals invade the rural areas, forcefully seizing land from the poor and powerless citizens.

The land grabbing by Taiwan investors that started at Gege-Mbondzela in the South-western parts of eSwatini last week, is highly expected to spread to other areas as the Chinese province advance its economic interests while violating human rights in the tiny Kingdom.

Taiwan is a diplomatic ally to eSwatini despite the United Nations (UN) Resolution 2758 of 1972 that recognizes the One China Principle, the Chinese province previously donated helicopters to the army were used to launch air-strikes, shoot and kill innocent civilians during the unrest.

The Taiwan helicopters donated to the army are highly expected to start patrolling Mbondzela-Gege to monitor the residents and intimidate them to refrain from protesting, some of the residents are sleeping in the forests after the demolition of their homes.

Government Spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo had not responded at the time of compiling this report.

Mciniseli Nhleko, a senior citizen of Gege was subsequently arrested for raising a voice against the Taiwan nationals who demolished his home last week, the Taiwanese are using businessmen Tito Dlamini and Sandile Simelane.

John Fan, the Managing Director of Nhlangano FTM Garments has been identified as one of the Taiwan investors who, with the backing of those in power, is grabbing land from the poor and powerless citizens.

Both businessmen, the Taiwan investor including Ambassador Jeremy Liang declined to comment regarding the ongoing human rights violations.

On another note, eSwatini pro-democracy and civil society groups strongly condemned the ongoing human rights violations perpetrated by Taiwan, a province of the People’s Republic of China.

Mlungisi Makhanya, the President of the People’s United Democratic Movement(PUDEMO) told this Swaziland News that, the diplomatic relations between eSwatini and Taiwan represents nothing but, a misery for the ordinary citizens.

“What this represents for the ordinary people of Swaziland is misery as you would see that, the people of Gege are today without homesteads because a Taiwanese engineered economic interest has led to them being evicted. We want to remind our people that, it must never be lost to them that, when the Royal Science Technology Park was to be constructed, emaSwati were violently and forcefully evicted there in a very cruel manner and that project, Swazis would remember, is being bankrolled by Taiwan”, said the PUDEMO President.

Public Accounts Committee blasts Health Ministry

By Phephile Motau, eSwatini Observer, 16 May 2024

SOURCE

The shortage of drugs and other medical supplies in the country is not the only challenge facing the ministry of health, as it seems that they also have an administrative crisis.

This was evident yesterday when the ministry failed to submit four of five responses to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) which held its first sitting yesterday.

It was attended by the officials from the ministry and other PAC partners including the Auditor General’s (AG) officials, police, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Civil Service Commission (CSC).

The ministry, led by the Principal Secretary (PS) Khanya Mabuza was the first to appear before the PAC and only submitted one report, which was riddled with mistakes.

The PAC had to send away the ministry, without even discussing the one report which was submitted, as it was also submitted to the committee yesterday. The ministry has been given seven working days to submit the reports.

The responses were from audit queries made in five reports since 2021. These were the PAC Recommendations for 2021, the PAC Recommendations 2022, Auditor General’s Compliance Report for the Financial year Ended March 31, 2021, Financial Audited Report on the Consolidated Government Accounts of the kingdom of Eswatini for the year Ended March 31, 2022, Audit of Acquisition and Distribution of Medicine to Health Facilities 2023 and the Financial Audited Report on the Consolidated Government Accounts of the Kingdom of Eswatini for the year Ended March 31, 2022.

Street monitoring cameras for Mbabane

By Sithembile Hlatshwayo, Times of eSwatini, 15 May 2024

SOURCE

MBABANE: The capital city will soon have internet protocol (IP) cameras, which will assist in monitoring and giving information on every movement within the central business district (CBD).

The cameras will be able to monitor traffic, among other things. It was revealed that 50 cameras will be installed in strategic areas. This has raised serious concerns of invasion of privacy by some stakeholders who wanted clarity on how the project would work. This was raised during the launch of the 5G government network and smart city (Mbabane) at Hilton Garden Inn yesterday.

Eswatini Communication Commission (ESCCOM) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mvilawempi Dlamini raised the issue of privacy with cameras installed everywhere. He said there was a need to strike a balance between the State’s security interests as well as peoples’ privacy. Dlamini said there was a need for agreements in some of the aspects, as the project was a good initiative. Dlamini said there needed to be discussions around the sharing of infrastructure to avoid having multiple poles, adding that there was a need to come up with standards for same.
Another concern which was raised by the stakeholders was fear of the project becoming a white elephant. They wanted clear information in terms of who would support the project financially once it has been implemented. The stakeholders made an example of the cameras along Malagwane Hill, which ended up failing.
