The greed of Barnabas Dlamini,Swaziland’s illegally-appointed Prime Minister and other Swazi politicians has made it impossible for them to save the kingdom’s failing economy.
Since politicians granted themselves massive increases in salary and allowances and topped it up with severance payments for themselves that will cost more than E60 million, it is impossible for them to tell ordinary workers they must lose their jobs or take pay cuts to save the economy.
That is the thrust of an article by Innocent Maphalala, editor of the Times Sunday, published in his newspaper today (10 October 2010).
Maphalala says the current industrial disputes involving fire fighters and nurses are a direct result of politicians giving themselves huge pay rises – why, the workers say, should we not have the same as the politicians?
‘Ministers cannot say with a straight face that there is no money,’ he writes.
