A strike and mass march by
public servants in Swaziland is expected to take place on Tuesday (24 October
2017) in the latest round in a pay dispute.
They will march to the Ministry
of Public Service before going to the Prime Minister’s Office.
For the first time the
kingdom’s main union confederation the Trade Union Congress of Swaziland
(TUCOSWA) will take part in the protest.
Workers want a 9 percent cost of living wage
rise but the Swazi Government has offered zero. Last week newspapers
in Swaziland reported that senior public servants had been given salary increases
that could be as much as 115 percent in some cases.
Unions taking part include
the National Public Service and Allied Workers Union (NAPSAWU), Swaziland
National Association of Teachers (SNAT) and the Swaziland Democratic Nurses
Union (SWADNU).
