Statement from Swaziland Solidarity Network
APRIL 12 UPRISING ORGANISES THE UNORGANISED
12 April 2011
The April 12 uprising is now led by ordinary masses. This is a good thing.
After the entire leadership of the Labour Coordinating Council was arrested, the labour unions simply continued with their protest as planned. When they entered the centre of Manzini city, ordinary people from all walks of life joined them to voice out their support for the uprising.
The four groups currently controlling the four parts of the city are a mixture of organised unionists and the ordinary citizens. Police are beating them up with clubs but they are refusing to lie down and immediately regroup and continue with the protest.
Police have now started using rubber bullets to disperse the crowds. This, also, is failing. Shops in the city have closed down and the bus rank is empty. This bravery is extraordinary and we salute the people of Swaziland.
