The crisis in Swaziland is being ignored by the rest of the world, its civil society and trade union leaders said yesterday (31 March 2011).
People in Swaziland were dealing with the most frightening conditions, Swaziland Coalition of Concerned Civic Organisations (SCCCO) founder Mandla Hlatshwayo told journalists in Johannesburg, the SAPA news agency reported.
‘People are not getting assistance from the state,’ Hlatshwayo said.
‘There is massive corruption within government... Swaziland is in the middle of a huge financial crisis.’
The government was trading votes for food, said Swaziland National Association of Teachers president Sibongile Mazibuko.
‘People are voting for a loaf of bread... the government is making people hungry so that they are forced to come [to] the MPs for help.
‘A meal is enough to get a vote, service delivery is not needed,’ she said.
