‘UPRISING’: GVT ‘PASSING OUT GUNS’

An activist said yesterday (31 March 2011) that Swazi ministers have used money from their self-imposed salary cuts to pay for 500 recently hired security officials, further beefing up forces ahead of a planned 12 April pro-democracy uprising.

The government is passing out guns to Swaziland’s army, one of the largest in the region, instead of using the money to provide public services, Mandla Hlatshwayo, founder of the Swaziland Coalition of Concerned Civic Organizations, the Associated Press news agency reports.

The government has stepped up its security presence since the mass protest on 18 March 2011 that called on the government to resign, Thuli Makama, director of the Swaziland Legal Assistance Centre, told AP.
