BOMB KILLS TWO IN SWAZILAND

Two people who were about to plant a bomb on a bridge near one of Swaziland's royal palaces were killed late on Saturday when the device exploded prematurely, police said today (21 September 2008).

Reuters news agency reports police saying that two other people, one believed to be South African, were also involved in the planned attack near a palace belonging to King Mswati III just outside the capital Mbabane.

The explosion took place the day after Swaziland had held controversial elections. Political parties are banned in the kingdom and parliament has no real power. Earlier this month police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at pro-democracy protesters as they marched through the streets.
