I wrote yesterday (2 September 2008) and the day before about how international news agencies covered Swaziland’s annual Reed Dance. I made the point that the reports from Agence France-Presse and Reuters would be the only accounts that most people in the world would get a chance to see.
It also means that the way these agencies report the event and what they highlight (and what they choose to miss out) determines what most people in the world get to learn about the Reed Dance and Swaziland more generally.
Just to follow up the thought, yesterday I spotted one or other of the agencies’ reports being published by news organisations in Singapore, Switzerland, Republic of China, India, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, United States and France.
These were just the ones that I saw. All of them were on the Internet, so it’s a fair assumption that in addition to the Internet versions there were many more news organisations using the agency reports in their print and broadcast versions.
