Anger as Swazi Minister has lavish wedding do in New York

A government minister in Swaziland has surprised her fellow Swazis by announcing that she is having a lavish wedding ceremony in New York.

Minister of Sports Culture and Youth Affairs, Hlobisile Ndlovu has invited 25 people to her wedding reception in New York. One is coming from Zimbabwe. The minister will be getting married to Pastor Fidelis this weekend and the reception will take place in New York on May 28.

But the news has not been well received in Swaziland where the majority are poor. This is seen as yet another example of African politicians being hopelessly out of tune with the people they lead.

Minister Ndlovu’s spokesperson Thabile Maripe said this was a private matter.

“The people we will cater for have not confirmed yet due to the unavailability of visas,” Maripe stated.

She said those attending the reception would leave from OR Tambo International Airport [Johannesburg, South Africa] on May 26, arrive in New York on May 27 for the function the next day.

All the guests attending the function in New York from the country will return on May 30, and they will be catered for by the couple until their return, including accommodation.

Maripe said that New York was a place close to the couple’s heart as the pastor stayed there for a long time while studying. The minister just loves New York too.

“Whenever she goes to trips overseas she makes sure that she passes through New York since she has a lot of friends there,” said Maripe.

Some guests expected to attend the wedding in Pigg’s Peak will be from South Africa and Zimbabwe and they will be around 250 to 300.

Those invited to the wedding are also invited to the reception if they will be able to cater for the trip and accommodation.
