Don’t play for Mswati
As democracy activists in Swaziland, we welcome the call by some of the solidarity movements in SA, such as the Swaziland Solidarity Network, for a total cultural boycott of Swaziland by South African artists.
South African artists, especially, should understand that even during the struggle against apartheid most international musicians did not visit apartheid SA . This was for the simple reason that if they were to perform in SA, the apartheid government would have used their visit as a propaganda tool to say that all was well in SA. Solidarity with the oppressed people was therefore necessary.
We call for the same here in Swaziland from the South African artists. Whenever South African artists visit Swaziland, the regime here uses their visit to market the fake idea that there is peace in Swaziland.
Artists should make a public declaration that they will never set foot in Swaziland as long as there is no democracy. This will further assist in the isolation of King Mswati’s regime and make the road to democracy much smoother.
